leaving disk open

I think my rather lengthy topic description says it all. I cannot find out how to or if it possible to add one file to a dvd rw so that I can add other files later on. At present there seems no way around getting a message that all files already on the disk will be deleted. Am I missing something obvious? It is important to me so that I can keep adding to one disk until it is filled which saves a lot of time and power. In the days of Nero et al one could do this at choice. ImgBurn is a much better program except for this one problem. Thanks to anyone who can help.
