hatrabbit Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Hi… I have 2 laptops in front of me. One is a PC with XP, the other a Mac with a windows partition running the same XP. Both have Imgburn 2.5.1.0. When I burn a ripped DVD on the Windows machine, it produces a perfectly working DVD that plays in my DVD player… I burn the exact same files with all the exact same settings on the Mac and the player can't play it. It spins for a few seconds and gives the message "cannot be played". Any insight on this will be greatly appreciated. The optical drive in the MacBook is: HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N. Both XP installs are from the same disc and have SP3. What other info is needed?
mmalves Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 The logs of the burns on each computer (look in ImgBurn's Help menu) would be useful.

mmalves Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 Burn at 4x or 8x on the macbook to see if you get a better burn, and also enable Verify as that's what tells you if the disc is good and readable or not. You could do with better quality blanks too (Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are the best you can get).
LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 29, 2010 Posted April 29, 2010 You're lucky the Toshiba burn worked, that drive is ancient and was no doubt using a very generic write strategy to burn the media!
hatrabbit Posted April 30, 2010 Author Posted April 30, 2010 (edited) Yeah no matter what problems I'm having with my newer, better devices, that old Fujitsu with the Toshiba drive always works. It's my VW Bug. Anyway, in my Mac's HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS21N I've tried every speed and settings change, always with Verbatim DVD-R media. No luck, I just can't get a DVD out of it that's playable on a DVD player. I'm about to blame it on the optical drive itself. Any other thoughts on this? Edited April 30, 2010 by hatrabbit
LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 30, 2010 Posted April 30, 2010 If the discs in your log are Verbatim, they must be the value range. The real/decent Verbatim discs do not use the 'CMC' (or 'CMC MAG. AM3' to be exact) dye, they use 'MCC' or 'MKM' dyes. If the real/decent ones also fail, try cleaning the drive. If it still doesn't work, get yourself a new drive.
