It seems Win 7 x64 is getting worse and worse about having problems burning CDs and DVDs. It's kind of a hit and miss effort. I get differant errors or can't find the burner drive or can't verfiy the image after burning, it may just hang or can't close the disk. In short, if you can thing of an error it's probably done it. I've tried 4 differant CD and DVD media type manufacers, mostly all cd-r or dvd-r and cd-rw and dvd-rw. It may burn the disk and then can't read it or no telling what it will come up with. There has been no errors with error numbers so I'm kind of at a loss on that. I've included my last imageburn log file.

Also, here's a write mode file.

Have you tried to attach the burner to a non RAID connector?

RAIDS + optical drives are normally not a happy marriage.

Could also see if you have the latest chip set drivers installed.

Now I'm really confused???? Although RAID is available it's not turned on. I've added another drive some time ago but haven't touched the DVD drive or it's connections, yet it's reported in the log as being on RAID. I'm not versed in RAID so any help getting it off RAID will be appreciated.

It is connected to a RAID port on mainboard. They look the same but they are controlled by different chips.

You have to identify wich one are regular and wich are RAID ports. Offen regular SATA are red colored and RAID are diffrent.

Check with your mainboard manual and move the burner to a regular SATA connection.

I looked at the connections on the motherboard and the DVD drive is connected to a SATA connection and in BIOS it's set as sata also. Although the MB has RAID capability it is not turned on nor never has been. Why would the DVD drive be reported as being RAID when RAID was never setup on the computer? Now I am confused! lol Could it be something corrupt in the BIOS? There is an update to the BIOS, should I flash it?

Thx for all your help!

That's why updates are for. Flash it! Are there any info what's chaged in new version?

And also you could update chipset/controller drivers too.

Still at a loss. I've updated everything on the site u gave me http://www.ma-config.com/ including BIOS. I've unpluged the dvd drive after uninstalling it from device manager and it is still reported as RAID in imageburn.

Do you know what model of mother board you have?

(It should be stated in the list in the ma-config.com page.)

Have you been in to BIOS and seen what the settings are in there?

Yep, BIOS is set to SATA and RAID is not active (disabled) as it always has been. That's what's so confusing about this drive being reported as RAID.

Posted

Have you installed this driver package? You could also try burning at 16x or 24x instead of MAX.

Installed that driver package, no joy, still reported by imageburn as a RAID drive. I've tried differant burn speeds as low as 1 but still the same, coasters!

Well, then try booting with RAID enabled in the system's BIOS just to see if it works.

Rather not do that as I understand that I'll lose everything on the drive when I disable raid again. I don't like or need raid, that's why it's never been enabled. On boot the black screen says that raid is disabled.

BTW, is there a registry value that sets this drive to raid that I could change?

Posted

Nope, as that information is provided by the driver. As for trying with RAID enabled, the driver should detect the change by itself, or else Windows just won't boot. In that case disabling RAID in the BIOS would take it back as it was and it'll work again.

Does it hang if you try with Test Mode enabled? Please try with CD-R and DVD-R too if you can.

Nope, didn't hang in test mode with either CD-R or DVD-R. Checked BIOS again and RAID is still disabled. Installed a LG Super Multi 24x I had and it's reported by imageburn as RAID also. After enabling RAID in BIOS it come up and wanted me to set an array. At that point I got out of it, mainly cause I don't know anything about raid. Went back into BIOS, disabled RAID and set sata 1 n 2 (the DVD drives) back to sata instead of RAID. Both DVD drives are still showing RAID in imageburn. Being new to imageburn I have to ask, could imageburn be reporting them wrong? Other than the BIOS, what sets RAID on these drives?

Posted

That value comes from the Windows drivers. They're probably always running in a RAID type config, even if no RAID array has actually been configured.

Some drivers, especially Nvidia ones, seem to do that an awful lot.

Any way to replace Nvida's RAID drivers to just good old SATA drivers? Guess there's no way to replace the BIOS for one without RAID?

Just had a thought: Although imageburn reports the drives as RAID and windows device manager doesn't ( or would it?) could my bruning problem lie somewhere else?

Can you post a log from a DVD burn please?

Try as many different DVD formats as you own. (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW etc)

You could try uninstalling everything nvidia related from 'programs and features' in control panel and then uninstalling the controllers (inc the driver if that's an option) from within Device Manager and rebooting.

Uninstalled everything Nvidia ask you suggested and it was reinstalled on boot. DVD drives still seen as RAID in imageburn but not in device manager.

Here are the logs from my burns with the disk that I have. I also tried a couple of imation DVD-RWs and a Sony DVD-RW but the optiarc drive wouldn't see them, although they work fine on my xp system. Another note of interest is that imageburn doesn't see the Drive 2 - Info: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24LS50 YP01 (D:) (RAID) for writing noted in the log. Should imageburn be reinstalled to see it, as I just installed that drive.

OKay, here's the logs in order in burns:
