This question really shows my ignorance but should I tick the "Verify" box or not? DVDs seem to run fine if I don't even if "Verify" found a problem, made a nice Yuden coaster, then I retry without "Verify."

 

And I suppose if you take the time to answer, I might as well ask if the errors that stop the burning process in "Verify" are because of bad information in the original file or a bad sector on the blank DVD? Or could it be either?

You should leave it enabled as that's what ensures the disc is a good burn or not. If you get errors/miscompares it's most likely due to bad quality media.
