my dvd drive wont read or burn dvds (but works on cds) ive already contacted manufacturer, ran various tests that say drive is working properly and they say its a windows corrupt file from downloading dvd software. i have tried uninstalling drive and that didnt work i looked on microsoft.com to get help on corrupted files but i dont know what im looking for. i got a suggestion to do a system restore, but that would require moving a lot of info over to my E drive (and they told me that it would not be affected, but i am wary as that would be all my music and pictures!)

is this the only possiblility i have left? would this work?

here are a couple logs: imgburn log

If it's failing on everything, it's probably broken - ignore what the manufacturer says. I've seen a few drives that don't work on DVD but CD still works, they've all been broken and a new drive has not had the same issues.

You could always try and borrow a drive from someone and see if that has the same problem (where it was ok in that other persons machine).

so you dont thing a system restore would solve anything? is it worth a try or is my comp company just trying to get out of giving me a new drive? (its still under warranty)

also is it better to buy a drive separately? mine came with my computer-dell

I don't see why it would, no. Bad drivers can cause some problems but they don't normally stop the drive from doing everything DVD related!

I'd love to hear about the tests they have you perform to see if it can burn DVDs or not - surely they just make you burn something?! There is no other way they could test that functionality.

If Dell won't give you a new drive, you'll have to splash out the ?30 or so yourself on a new one.

well they didnt have me test to see if it would burn, just to see if it would read. so they had me keep inserting dvd or cd, and it would read one but not the other, then they had me do custom test in boot menu, and try dvds again, uninstall drive, try again then do regedit and delete some hkey reg_multi_sz and try it in safe mode.

i hate to have to deal with it, cus i know when i call back theyre going to say 'well the custom test says the device is working properly' but it is not! i dont care what it says! they just want to refer me to their software support which cost $99 to call!

Take it from us, I've seen a number of Dell machines with faulty drives right from word go, a new drive is your answer.

do you think LG screws them up special for dell or dell does it on their own

Posted

From what I've seen, regardless of the make of the drive, I think Dell must purchase factory seconds or something, so to answer your question, Dell do it all by thereselves, then again, it could just be fluke with some of the drives being faulty.

Posted

my suspicion is dell specs out a drive for low cost with new features and then doesn't back it up with firmware support

sounds exactly the same as a PS2 when its on the way out , will play cd but not dvd , and also the other way round . Thats usually the laser thats burnt out .

at least a drive is cheaper than a PS2

my dvd drive wont read or burn dvds (but works on cds)

Don't know if it's the same problem, but I had a Pioneer DVD burner that stopped reading or writing DVDs, and was still able to read and write CDs. This model had 2 lasers, one for the DVD and one for the CD, and the DVD laser burnt out just at the end of a write. Luckily, it was less than a month old, and got it replaced. :)

Basically Dell sucks ,once upon a time they were good machines but since their reputation and name was made they've constantly reduced the quality of their product ,they had to make everything propriority, fiddle with all the software to make it a Dell version ,and it looks like they put the biggest pieces of shit drives in their machines lately . Tell them you want a new drive that the comp is under warranty and tell those IT,s in India to go eat a steak ,they're just trying to weasel out of supplying a new drive

Posted

 I can't argue about Dell quality, I have one and despite it being fine for me for that past 3 years I have seen enough problems on forums with them and the components to realise they ain't the most reliable !!

I would give Dell a call and tell them that it is the drive, say you have borrowed a friends and installed that and it works great but when you re-install yours it craps out !! Make the buggers live up to their warranty !

Failing that if its gonna cost you $99 to get them to send you a new drive just go to somewhere like www.meritline.com and order one from there - with shipping you will still save over the $99 cost of help from Dell !

Posted

check out www.newegg.com great prices great service but dont let Dell off the hook if the person you talk to isn't helping you ask for their supervisor and their supervison and so on e-mail Dell corporate to express how dissapointed you are with their product after buying a machine based on their name and rep.Paying them 99$ for a warranty replacement they must be crazy tell them you want to return the whole computer for a refund dont give up be such a pain in the ass that they'll give you a drive to make you go away

Dell computers. What utter garbage. Dell, Compaq and HP have to be the *worst* suppliers of PCs on the planet. My old HP Pavilion was the worst piece of crap I?ve ever had the misfortune to use. The 3 Compaqs and (now only one) Dell that I have here are frustrating in the extreme. Shit drivers, shit hardware and shit case design (and all bought cheap at auction btw). By comparison, the PCs I built myself are easy to work on, have better hardware and are cheaper than the equivalent ?store bought? PCs. I think the package deals is what attracts buyers to spend their money on these things. Buy a HP and get a free printer etc etc. It?s a shame they don?t know how to build a decent PC.

I think you're dead right. :/ Also as shamus said the same goes for HP/Compaq.

There is no doubt putting a box together yourself is the way to go.

it's pretty hard hard to convince some people though, specialy when Dell offers a box with a 17" LCD monitor for $999.00. They are purely out to corner the market.

building your own is the way to go for sure I built the one I'm on right now when 800mhz was the fastest processor .Only time I got the BSOD was after installing memory that was later proved to be bootlegged it was supposed to be micron but wasn't .I've updated sound card ,video card ran a bunch of drives with it and a couple of OS's no problems out of the ordinary

Next time I am gonna build my own - when I bought the Dell PC I knew squat about building my own.

Having taken my case apart several times to fit new drives and a new HDD I have see there ain't a lot to them, there is a great place near me that supplies cases and all the parts and thats where I will be going when the time comes !

Posted

my first and only bought new computer was an open architecture P133,

I reloaded it(W95) a month or so later(course I crashed it).

Started with barebones then went to full builds. Much easier to fix if you built it yourself.

I bought a new case yesterday which I'm going to transfer my Athlon 3200 into. Anyway..... I went and bought a "Cooler Master CMStacker" type thingy with 11 drive bays in it. Pretty cool case. Now I need to track down some 3.5" to 5.25" adapter plates for the HDs that'll be going in it. I found a review of this thing if anyone's interested.
