Hi, i really am a complete noob with CD/DVD burning. I am trying to burn a windows 7 installation disk onto a DVD but get an I/O error. I am unsure what this actually is, but i assume its probably because im using the wrong format of DVD or burning at an incorrect speed or something.

Here is the log of the failure:

You don't need to use dual-layer media to burn that OS disc, so use the much more reliable single-layer blanks.

What do you mean by this ? I am totally ignorant of cd/dvd burning :/ Do you mean i need to use a single-layer DVD? How do i determine if one is single-layer? :S

Single-layer blanks are marked as DVD-R or DVD+R, while dual-layer are DVD-R DL and DVD+R DL (notice the DL for dual layer). Also single-layer blanks are cheap while dual-layer blanks are expensive.

Bleh, im using DL. Guess ill have to go out and buy some single layer. Out of interest, why does this matter? I know that dual layer can hold more information, but why would - oh, my burner probably doesn't support dual layer does it? :P

Acording to this your drive can handle dual layer.

The problem is that burning a dual layer is sometimes getting more complex for the burner, by not having the support for that blank in firmware.

Update firmware to latest A106 from here and that brand of disc might be supported better. If not , try Verbatim dual layers.

Oh, why are you wasting dual layer disc that are expensive when the content will fit on cheaper single layer media, I don't get it.

I honestly didn't know the difference when i bought them, they were on sale from a shop that was closing down - they only cost me £2.50 so i just grabbed them. And i don't have any single layer discs at home :/

I had already updated to the latest firmware after one of the above posts but got the same error. I'm getting some single layer discs later today - ill post if it works :)
