Woofa Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Well I'd have replied to the thread already here.... but I can't! Regarding the reply of the Imgburn author and I'm guessing site admin, "What's blocking you is you being a 'new member'", isn't that just a bit heavy handed? We activate our accounts and yet we're treated as children with a new toy that we have to be told how to play with it for an untold amount of time since I saw no mention of this in the registration page (maybe I missed it in the eula none of us ever read), no topic area for new members to tell us this with a sticky post with the rules, no mention of it in the activation message, no meantion except the topic I couldn't respond to. I had information to help someone yet I cannot post it. I came here not because I need help but because I've been using Imgburn for awhile and was feeling like I'd like to check out the bbs and donate. I'm feeling a lot less generous now yet I really appreciate this program, you've done an excellent job with it. Oh wait, I did come here to see if anyone else experiences the occasional hang on verfication after a burn but I'm not here to discuss that right now. Pretty crazy I can't even see my own user profile yet, much less respond to threads already here even though I have help to offer. Treat us like adults. Aren't there forum admins/mods to kill spammers? BTW, I admin 2 different bbs myself and help mod some others so I'm not without experience on the spam war but validation thwarts a lot of it. I've never restricted new users like here. Makes me want to leave and not come back. How long must I wait? If the info is already somewhere then how about a pointer?
ianymaty Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 For a new user you should make you own thread and describe your problem, there you should to be able to reply. If you have no problem and want just to help others, start a thread (you did it now) in Chat and express your gratitude/angry and your experience with ImgBurn. Then, I think you are able to reply to other threads and help others with your knowledge and experience. Welcome abord!
LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 You have to understand that about 0.00001% of people that join the forum want to offer help as the first thing they do. What they want is help themselves and it REALLY annoys me when they hijack someone elses thread saying 'hey I have the same problem' when really it's nothing like the same. Believe me, this was happening ALL the time and it got old very quickly. So I decided to do away with the whole 'hijacking' thing by making the 'new members' unable to reply to a topic that wasn't their own. Problem solved. As for the profile stuff, if you intend on sticking around for a while, does it really matter if you can't edit your profile info that very same second?! I'm sure it can't be *that* important to people - assuming they're 'adults' about it. It doesn't take long to get auto promoted out of the 'new members' group and it just makes our lives that little bit easier. Anyway, welcome to the forum and I look forward to you helping out just as soon as you can.

I'm sure it can't be *that* important to people - assuming they're 'adults' about it. It's annoying and very strange. Since I run a couple bbs I understand the issues you're talking about but it's a pretty heavy handed way to deal with it. I couldn't even PM the person I likely had help for. It doesn't take long to get auto promoted out of the 'new members' group and it just makes our lives that little bit easier. Anyway, welcome to the forum and I look forward to you helping out just as soon as you can. What is not that long? What is the criteria? I am not filled with unending time on my hands to wait for some unspecified period of time and monitor when I might be able to post to a thread. As for seeing my user profile it's a pretty common thing for someone when they make a user account to want to know what their profile looks like to the world and what is shown. It's reasonable. BTW, I only cared about the profile after finding I couldn't post and snooping to see if I needed to change something on my account since there was no mention of this in the account creation process. I found out when I thought maybe I could PM the person I had help for directly and looking for the method which to do that since I'm not familiar with this particular bbs software. Seriously, this needs to be mentioned during account creation or via a new users forum explaining it and having whatever time period this is disclosed. I'm not going to hang out here until this unspecified time period lapses. Too many limitations with unspecified wait times on new users, if it was spelled out what to expect that would be different but it's not. ianymaty thanks for your response but having made this thread did not alter my ability to respond to other threads.
