W 19:11:10 Failed to Write Sectors 0 - 31 - Reason: Power Calibration Area Is Full

Hi everyone,

I'm having issues with my DVD burner since a few weeks. I've been burning about 30 DVDs successfully, and failed 12 to this point, which is a pretty bad ratio for a pretty new burner... I've been using CDBurnerxp, Nero 5, Nero 7, Roxio 9, Roxio 10 (and maybe some more) and lately, ImgBurn. Sometimes I can burn up to 5 DVDs in a row with no problem, sometimes not a single one. Rebooting the computer usually doesn't help. This DVD burner has been working fine for 2 mths and I didn't changed anything on my system...I'm even using the same disks...

I checked the fw of my drive, it's the latest version.

Here's the log from ImgBurn:

Not the highest quality on those discs and that usually indicates what you see in your log. Sometimes they work and sometimes the just give errors.

Might try one of the lower write speeds.

Another possible reason for the new failure rate is that the laser beam is dirty. A cleaning disc might help.

Already tried with lower speeds for 1 week - had about the same amount of errors.

Laser beam dirty? After only 2 mths of use? I've had some burners for 2-3 yrs and never used any cleaning disk - and the last time I had such a bad ratio on a burner was with my first burner ever, a Traxdata 2/2/6...a bunch of years ago!

well, I'm using these TDKs since 2 years and always have had good results, on the 4 burners (home, wife's, work,...) I use.

Ok, what answer would you like to hear?

Just tell us and we'll say it.

Or you could listen to what's being recommend and actually take it on board.

Don't waste our time shooting the replies down until you've actually tried what's been said.

TDK is a brand name, they just rebadge discs from various companies. The ones you've got there are using the 'CMC MAG. AM3' dye and it's just not a very good one. Your drive can't find a decent power setting for the laser and that's why it's throwing that error up.

So in short, try some better discs - Verbatim (which will then use the MCC or MKM dye) or Taiyo Yuden (TY or YUDEN dye).

Sticking with DVD-R, I'd go for Taiyo Yudens (The 'TYG02' dye is my favourite).
