Luponius Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 (edited) Hello, I'm having problems figuring out how to get this backup working. Checking around it seems for x360 backups, I need to go to Tools -> Settings -> Write [Tab] and toggle manual layerback and input the numbers "1913760". What makes me wonder is that opening the .dvd file I see that that same information is in there too, so wouldn't this be redundant/do any possible harm? Any thoughts on this. Secondly, I am not using Verbatim Dual Layers, I understand this is not ideal, and I should be prepared for many bitchslaps and coasters, but since it's a race against trial and error, I'd rather use cheapo disks for the first backup, and if I got a good grasp on it I'll switch to Verbs. Right now I'm with a Smartbuy DVD+R DL (1-8X) 8.5GB/240min. My brother's friend managed backups on these before, and I'd like to give it a shot myself so I am positive I got stuff down right. I also get a "Failed to set L0 data zone capacity" warning whenever I tried to start burning. So far I burnt at 1x, 2x and 2.4x speeds (Destination Media mentioned 2.4x speed so I guess 2.4 was meant to nail it). Sadly, even though I burnt 3 DVDs (3 coasters) I did those yesterday, and since then I lost the log) Startup log provides me with this: I 11:05:23 ImgBurn Version 2.5.2.0 started! I 11:05:23 Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600 : Service Pack 2) I 11:05:23 Total Physical Memory: 2,095,148 KB - Available: 1,093,616 KB W 11:05:23 Duplex Secure's SPTD driver can have a detrimental effect on drive performance. Do you think it'd be beneficial for me to uninstall the SPTD, or try it on the other laptop? Also, yes - I only have laptop slimline DVD Burners available. Is it impossible to burn with these or does it mean a higher % of coasters lol? Thanks for your support, and if you know if I can recover the logs from some log file somewhere I can get you logs as well. EDIT1: http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/message.jspa?messageID=177055 also found that in regards to my drive. Seems to be something about DMA and how he can't burn anything because of that. Just wondering since I did burn DVDs before but that was a long time ago, never tried DLs until now. LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 There's a guide on logs here - http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=14632 You don't need to touch the layer break option in the settings, that's what the DVD file is for. You should have got Verbatim discs - http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=8000 No, DMA is not the issue here. Install XP SP3 unless you have a valid reason not to. You could always get an external normal size burner.
Luponius Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 3 burns worth of a log file. I really ain't sure where it cuts and starts again to be honest. I'll remove the layerback settings from imgburn. Anything else i should do, aside from vertabim and SP3, since I had a multitude of BSODs with SP3 Do you think the "Set L0 Data Zone Capacity Failed! - Reason: Invalid Field in Parameter List" could be coming from that value i manually set in the layerback? LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I doubt SP3 itself is causing your BSOD's, bad drivers do that. The BSOD normally tells you which driver the exception occurred in. From there you just Google its name, find out which product is responsible for it and update/remove it. Nope, you changing the LB setting isn't the cause of the error. Your drive is just erroring out as I try to set the LB position... but it appears to have actually done what I've asked... weird! You can either just put up with it or you can buy 10 Verbs for £10 and try those. If they work, great. If they don't then you'll know that you need a new drive.
Luponius Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 Thanks for the reply, what I will try to do is burn them on my brother's laptop, it's a slimline drive but he has Win7 and keeps everything fully updated. If that doesn't work I'll consider Verbs for burning or rely on my mate once he's back from vacation =]
Luponius Posted September 16, 2010 Author Posted September 16, 2010 I've tested on my bro's laptop and things changed a bit. For a start the initial Set L0 error didn't show up, which is a breath of fresh air compared to yesterday, instead it detected the disk's speeds as 3x,4x and 6x. As you can see I was burning at 2.4x (going by my previous detections of the disks on my laptop) My bro's detected stuff differently, and personally I'd rather rely on that, since his is about as new as it can be. Should I: - Burn at 3x/4x/6x (if yes, which specifically) =+= 2.4x ended me up with a coaster as I expected after the warnings I got. - Change some settings/go over possible driver updates - Something else? mmalves Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 You should have got Verbatim discs - http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=8000 You can either just put up with it or you can buy 10 Verbs for £10 and try those. You should update ImgBurn too.
Luponius Posted September 17, 2010 Author Posted September 17, 2010 Already talked about verbs, so no need to repeat, I'll go for the update, but what speed would be recommended in this case? It's detected as 3x 4x 6x, is slowest "best" or should I try going higher? Or could it be that speed has nothing to do with this but something else is the problem?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 By selecting 2.4x, you've already tried 3x. You can't make a drive use a speed it doesn't support, it'll just semi ignore the request and go with the closest one it DOES support. That's the whole purpose of this line: W 22:00:06 Write Speed Miscompare! - Wanted: 3,324 KB/s (2.4x), Got: 4,155 KB/s (3x) It means you asked for 2.4x but the drive will actually burn using 3x. So now you're left with 4x and 6x. All drives/firmware will support different speeds on different media. The speeds his one reports aren't better or more reliable than yours, it just doesn't work like that.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Yes. Slimline drives are rubbish. Double layer discs (other than Verbatim) just aren't all that compatible with *any* drive and often fail to burn or verify. So you're 0 for 2 and that's just not a good combo for getting a decent burn.
