Arun Posted October 6, 2010 Posted October 6, 2010 (edited) I am trying to burn a 40GB iso on to a Sony 50GB BD-RE DL. I got about 11 failed to write errors as in the log below. THe burn completed though but it freezes when playing back in my standalone bluray player. Any ideas. Is it the media or the drive itself at issue? LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Turn off 'FastWrite'. It's better to control the quick burning (aka the drives automatic write/verify) by formatting with 'spare areas' enabled or disabled. It's impossible to say if it's drive or the media at fault. Try the same disc in another drive that's the same model, then you'll know (of course I know that's probably not going to be possible). Have you been doing a proper full format on these discs before trying to use them (it normally takes a few hours) ?
Arun Posted October 7, 2010 Author Posted October 7, 2010 (edited) thats the problem, I cant do a full format, it stops at 54% and then I have to force shutdown imgburn and restart the pc to get my disk out. Edited October 7, 2010 by Arun
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 7, 2010 Posted October 7, 2010 Then you're pretty much stuck, the drive doesn't like something about the discs. I'm not familiar with all the BD dyes, but you might be able to find some BD-RE DL discs that use something different to 'MEI-T01-01'. Does the drive have an issue with single layer BD-RE discs?
Arun Posted October 7, 2010 Author Posted October 7, 2010 I have not tried single layer bd-re, but single bd-r have no problem
Arun Posted October 8, 2010 Author Posted October 8, 2010 (edited) I got a new bd-re tdk brand. Heres the graph from imgburn. the burn went successful but got verify errors with miscompares. anything unusual here? Edited October 8, 2010 by Arun
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 I assume that one made it through a proper 3hr long erase/format ok? Do another full erase, but this time, enable spare areas (Tools -> Settings -> Write tab -> Page 1 -> Options box) before doing so. Then do a discovery mode burn on the entire disc. I'm leaning towards it being a faulty drive right now - or the firmware is just rubbish and won't let it write to anything.
Arun Posted October 9, 2010 Author Posted October 9, 2010 i have just 5 more days to rma the drive, so going to do that first. I am thinking its the drive too. I got a completed burn and verified 100%, but playing it in a bd player it froze badly
Arun Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 (edited) new drive, same issue...erase stops around 40%. Burns dont verify after completion. What can I do now? Edited October 19, 2010 by Arun
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 I've just started a full format on a MEI-T01-01 disc in my BH10LS30. I'll let you know what happens. Update: Currently at 58% on the formatting phase (not the zeroing sectors one).
Arun Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 I just ran the disk in discovery mode and here's the graph aftera complete run
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 That looks like it burnt ok (well, it got to the end!)... what did the log say? You don't want any write retries on a BD-RE disc. You can test the burst rate in something like Opti Drive Control (or CDSpeed / DiscSpeed). The burst rate isn't going to make a difference here though. p.s the format is now 85% complete.
Arun Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 (edited) there were no write retries, and the log was clean. I am trying another full erase. The only difference this time is my AV(Nod32 64 bit) is turned off. What do u use for cleaning bd-r? Edited October 19, 2010 by Arun
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 For cleaning what, the drive or a disc? You said you had a new drive.... don't clean it! You said you had a new disc... don't clean it! I normally use a soft duster on discs though (combined with heavy breathing - lol).
Arun Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 the disk, to remove firngerprints because I have a sweaty hand.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 You know to pick discs up avoiding the writable area yeah? Never pick them up with a finger on the top and bottom (unless your fingers are long enough to reach the middle of the disc), use the edges or sick your finger through the middle.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 The bit the drive does has finished, yup. Now it's on the zeroing sectors part - 33% complete.
Arun Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 so wonder what could be wrong on my end. Does overclocking affect anything? Like bus speed or something? My latest erase stopped at 47%. And the drive is locked till I reboot

If it really just stops without any sort of error being displayed, it's probably due to drivers or something.
Arun Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 what drivers? I am on Win 7 x64, and have updated all the chipset drivers, since the problem started. My motherboard is a gigabyte GA-P35 D3SL rev 2.0 with the latest bios.
Rincewind Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 Well if you are sure it is not the drivers, then have you considered looking for a new version of firmware for your burner? Perhaps that might help.
Arun Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 theres no newer firmware for my drive than what I have.
Arun Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 yay!! After repeatedly trying to erase, hang, reboot, now the drive has stopped working, looks like. When I open imgburn, it does a 5 minute search for device and then find the drive. And when I select write mode, it says device is in the process of being ready and sits there. eject does not work also.
