Hi Guys,

I'm relatively new at burning my own blu ray's and have been using imgburn without to many problem until this evening.

I have Windows 7 on my laptop with a built in blu ray burner and the latest version of of Imgburn installed. I was trying to back up Jarhead it all seems to go to plan and seems to indicate that track is being "reserved", then does nothing. I am also then unable to eject the blank disc and have to use task manager to shut down the Imgburn program. Any suggestions as to what the problem may be.

I'm using at the moment Sony blank DL discs that have never let me down yet.

I've tried a couple of new discs and get the same problem every time. Very peculiar?

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Try updating your chipset/storage drivers (use SIW to identify them).

If your system uses Intel chipset then install this (reboot if asked) and this (also reboot if asked).

Thanks for the info i'll give it a go tonight. I'm not 100% sure but i think the last time i actually burned a blu ray on my laptop it may have been the previous version of Imgburn 2.5.1.0

Before i get stuck into "updating the chipset" would it be worthwile trying the older version of Imgburn? if yes is it possible to download an earlier version?

Thanks again for all your help.

Thanks Lightning,

I'll investigate the "chipset updating" options and see how i get on.

I also have Imgburn on my XP pc and it works flawlessly on that computer.

Cheers.

Yes but are you burning 'MEI-T01-01' BD-R with a UJ230AS drive on that one?

It's impossible to say at this point if the problem is just caused by some driver issue or if it's the actual drive/firmware/media combo you're using.

All slimline drives are pretty rubbish, and that's just when burning DVDs!

Posted

I know that Laptop drives are very slow but i didn't realise that the combination of drive and media was so critical. It seems to rip the blu rays without any problems.

I'll have to try and update the firmware to see if i can get anywhere with it.

Is it advisable to change the drive for another type?

Thanks.

It's not that they're slow, it's just they're not as well made or anywhere near as good at doing anything as their 'normal' size desktop PC couterparts.

The best thing you can do is buy an external drive... but USB 2.0 isn't quick enough for the speeds BD drives can now reach (12x burning etc). You'd need eSATA or USB 3.0.

Again, that's only if the driver updates don't fix the issue, they may well do. What chipset does your laptop have... any ideas? Intel?

Posted

Thanks Lightning much appreciated.

I'll find out what my chipset is when i get home tonight and try the firmware updates first. If that doesn't work i may look at getting an external burner as you suggested with an Esata connection the only problem is i will need to buy some kind of an adaptor as i i only have hdmi and usb 2.0 on the laptop.

Posted

Do you have any sort of pcmcia slot?

Obviously there's no sense in getting a USB 2.0 -> eSATA adapter, you'll be in exactly the same position as if you were to use USB 2.0 directly (probably worse actually).

Posted

Well it's a newish Sony laptop and i'm pretty sure there are 2-3 slots for various memory sticks etc and i have definitely seen a "biggish" slot with a plastic blanking cover that looks like it takes a large rectangular shaped something.

Sorry to be a bit vague but i'm at work at the moment so will have to get the instruction book for the laptop out when i get home tonight and report back to you then.

Ok i've just checked my laptop and it is:

Sony Vaio VGN-AW21Z

Windows 7 Ultimate

Intel R core TM2 Duo CPU T9550 @2.66GHZ 2.67GHZ

4.00 GB RAM

32 Bit Operating sytem

Just looked at all the slots

1 x Memory Stick Pro

1 x SD Card

3 x USB 2.0

1 x HDMI

1 X Express Card slot

1 x Compact Flash slot

1 x i Link S400 Port

First i'll see if i can find the latest driver for the blu ray drive and see if that fixes it, if not i will try to update the chipsets as advised.

Posted

Thank you Lightning that express card (adaptor) looks like just the ticket for me.

Ok Good news is i've updated the driver for the blu ray drive from 1.01 to 1.11 and the bad news is it has changed absolutely nothing the fault is still exactly the same. Doh!

I'll try mmalves suggestion and download the SIW software to see if i can identify my chipset and if there is anything else i can update.

I'll report back when i have done a bit more investigating.

Thanks once again for all you support.

Lightning,

Something very peculiar going on here.

In the folder on my computer for blu ray rips there are two films Jarhead and Repo men (yes i know it's a crap film but someone from work lent it to me and i couldn't bring my self to watch it so just left it in the folder on the laptop).

Obviously i've been trying with Jarhead for a couple of days as i really wanted to watch that one but you know about all of the problems i have been having trying to burn it to a disc.

I don't know why but before i shut down the computer it just popped in to my head to try Repo Men instead. And low and behold the bloody thing started burning immediately with no hesitation or problems whatsoever and is still burning as i'm typing this now, at 15% done so far.

Any idea what's going on here? Could there be a problem with the Jarhead Rip?

All i can tell you for certain is that they both play perfectly on my laptop with the virtual drive software that i have and Repo Men is still copying at the moment. (what a waste of a blu ray disc!)

I may copy Jarhead on to my portable hardrive and see if i can burn it on my XP PC i'll report back if it works or not.

Jarhead 44.2 GB

Repo Men 41.8 GB

This is the log as it stands at the moment.

Well Repo Men has been burned and plays perfectly on my stand alone blu ray player so i'll try to move Jarhead later and report back on that. I will also rip another blu ray on to the laptop and see if Imgburn works this time or if indeed it was a fluke.

Posted

Update:

Jarhead has been moved to the PC and has been burned to a blank disc that plays back flawlessly.

I ripped another blu ray to the Laptop last night and managed to burn it back on the laptop using Imgburn and that one also plays back perfectly.

I'll have a few more trys on the Laptop with a some more blu rays and see how that goes.

Update:

I've gone back to Imgburn 2.5.0.0 and it seems to be working perfectly at the moment so i don't know what the conflict is with the latest version. I think i will run with this version for the moment until i can get the laptop updated. Thank you Lightning for all your help and advice with my problems.

I will drop you a donation later this week.

Cheers.
