MrShades Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 (edited) After producing a larger number of unusable Verbaitm DVD+R DL disks than I can't really afford, I'm turning to you guys for help and guidance. I've recently purchased a set of updated maps for my Lexus navigation system - at great expense - and ideally I'd like to archive the originals (4 of them, for different parts of Europe) and use a copy in the car. However, I'm really struggling to duplicate the DVD properly so that the nav system recognises it properly. Background on what I'm using - Pioneer DVR-215 (fw 1.19) on a Windows Vista Ultimate machine (Q6700, lots of RAM and disks!). The original disk information (from the right-hand panel in ImgBurn 2.5.2.0) is as follows: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-215 1.19 (ATAPI) Current Profile: DVD-ROM Disc Information: Status: Complete State of Last Session: Complete Erasable: No Sessions: 1 Sectors: 3,064,574 Size: 6,276,247,552 bytes Time: 681:02:74 (MM:SS:FF) TOC Information: Session 1... Can anyone help me, or point me in the right direction please? Whilst I have a few DLs left I can see them quickly vanishing in a puff of cash if I just use trial and error on this. Many thanks for all and any help. Shades Edited November 20, 2010 by MrShades
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 20, 2010 Posted November 20, 2010 Your drive must be rounding up the disc size so it's a multiple of 16. So I'm afraid there's probably nothing you can do about it.
MrShades Posted November 20, 2010 Author Posted November 20, 2010 Ah - thanks Lightning UK! Any recommendations or advice on current drives that possibly wouldn't suffer from this problem?????
MrShades Posted November 23, 2010 Author Posted November 23, 2010 I've now tried writing this image on my Pioneer DVR-215 as well as a Sony 5260S - and get identical results, with the image being written incorrectly sized. I could try a Pioneer DVR-216 and an LG unit as well, but am worried that it'll be the same. Can anyone assure me that this won't be a problem on all drives, and I should be able to find one somewhere that doesn't "round up" the size of the disk? Many thanks for any help or pointers... Shades
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 To be honest, I think all drives will. Whilst I don't exactly do a lot of DL burns/testing, I know that all DVD+R SL discs have their size rounded up to a multiple of 16... so it makes sense that DVD+R DL would do too (as they're both DVD + (plus) format).
MrShades Posted November 23, 2010 Author Posted November 23, 2010 Thanks again LIGHTNNG UK! It's nice to get a response from someone that knows what they're talking about ;-) Do DVD-R disks experience the same rounding issue? As you can't get DVD-R DLs it sounds as if I'm stuffed either way - I guess I'll just have to be ultra-careful with my original satnav disk in the car! Cheers, Shades

You CAN get DVD-R DLs - so would that be a possible route forward, or at least worth trying?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 No, DVD-R sizes aren't rounded up. You *can* get DVD-R DL discs but you can't move the layer break on those. I don't know if the LB position would also be a show stopper for you (or rather your NAV unit). I guess it's worth a try? edit: snap
MrShades Posted November 23, 2010 Author Posted November 23, 2010 Thanks again again again LIGHTNING UK! - Probably worth a shot I guess... will report back.
JustinH Posted January 15, 2011 Posted January 15, 2011 Thanks again again again LIGHTNING UK! - Probably worth a shot I guess... will report back. So, MrShades, did you ever give DVD-R a try?
