I keep getting this error trying to burn iso with memorex dvd-r at 4x speed

You're getting crazy slow speeds that'll mean burnproof is active the entire time - thus not helping the burn quality.

 

Update ImgBurn to the current version (2.5.4.0)

 

Load ImgBurn and click Tools -> Reset DMA. Then reboot your PC.
