Imgburn will not let me set the Booktype on my recently acquired Plextor PX-880SA

I am aware of the advanced settings to let Imgburn think it is an OEM Lite-On drive but the trick does not work

I am also aware that the Admin has made a note that the Booktype setting to DVD-ROM seems less important than it used to but especially navigation dvd's still require the DVD-ROM booktype

I have read here that there seems to be a problem to issue the correct bit setting command to the Plextor drives but then I do wonder why a program like Alcohol 120% which I thoroughly dislike, can do the job flawlessly

Also the suggestion to change the firmware with the aid of Media Code Speed dit seems pointless as the Plextor firmwares come as an exe file that cannot be extracted and seems to be encrypted anyway

To cut things short, is there any chance that we might see a forthcoming update with the possibility to change the book type on the Plextor?

Thanks

All that stuff you're talking about for MediaCodeSpeedEdit was for a totally different drive. It doesn't apply here.

If you try and do the booktype stuff manually, do the LiteOn commands actually work?

If so, there's no reason it wouldn't work automatically if you configure the drive ID properly in the 'Advanced' section.

LiteOn drives also have a permanent setting (EEPROM) for the booktype stuff so once you've configured it, it'll use that setting each time anyway.

Alcohol may have a lookup table for each and every drive so it knows which command to issue - I'm not doing that.

Posted (edited)

I have set the drive as Lite-On OEM and an ID of PLEXTOR DVDR PX-880SAIt did not give me the result I hoped for. DVD+R DL and DVD+R are not written as DVD-ROM

After starting up the computer in the morning and using Alcohol only once, I can write any number of DVD+R with Imgburn and all are then written as DVD-ROM. So the initial setting is retained for the remainder of the time the computer is left switched on but a re-start causes the booktype setting to be lost again

I also have a Lite-On LH20A1S which does not retain the book type setting after re-start but this drive will be set correctly with the Automatic Booktype setting

Although I appreciate that you're not doing the bit setting for the Plextor, I was hoping you would re-consider

Anyway, if you do change your view, the Plextor tab is already there!

Thanks

I've just crossflashed my iHAS324 to a PX-880SA to test this out.

Using the official 1.13 firmware and having added the 'PLEXTOR DVDR PX-880SA' Device ID under the 'Lite-On' Drive OEM section in the 'Advanced' box, the booktype stuff works just fine.

So all I can say now is that if you have a problem, you need to post the log so we can see what's actually happening.

Looks OK and I will try again tomorrow morning

Are the PX-880SA and Lite-On iHAS324 100% identical drives or only after cross flashing? And are the internals mechanically the same?

I am asking since writing results of the Plextor seem far superior to the Lite-On

Edited by gazo

I'm not in a position to answer that.

They use the same chipset and obviously the firmware on a real 880 and a crossflashed 880 is the same, I'm pretty sure that's all that matters.

Why did you abort the burn?

I 08:43:57 Abort Request Acknowledged

If you burn the disc + verify you should see if the burner book types DL+ media by itself.

Edit:

This guy had the same issue and the burner do not book type on its own.

But on the other hand it seems he managed to fix it in the advanced settings.

Edit 2:

There is an example in this guide in section 4.2.12.9 Advanced how to set it.

Yeah, it looks like you've done the 'Advanced' bit wrong somehow and that the program is only ever trying the real Plextor style booktype commands (rather than the LiteOn ones too).

All you have to add is this:

What does your booktype screen look like if you do as I've done below (selection wise) ?

That's what mine looks like having just turned it on.

Is there any reason you've stuck with the 1.12 firmware rather than updating to 1.13?

Posted (edited)

Perhaps just the image that tricks me. But it looks as there are two spaces after DVDR.

There are indeed 2 spaces, fully identical to the reported ID !

I have not updated the FW to 1.13 since I have just obtained the drive a week ago

I would like to know the contents of the change log.

Have not found it yet

On restart all settings as per your picture are the same with me. Everything is set to "Normal"
