LG BH10LS30 Severe crash with BDR and BD RE

Hello, I hope someone can help me as I have looked everywhere and couldn t find any infos on just my problem =(

I bought the LG BH10LS30 recently to use as an external drive so I bought a Sumvision Tempest 5.25" SATA to USB

Let me try and give as much informations as possible.

Drive starts normally but needs to be already powered on before connecting to the pc otherwise it causes severe windows crash.

Drive Shows normally in " my computer "

Drive works when inserting a CD audio / DVD movie (powerdvd starts up automatically) possible to browse a CD in Explorer too.

I could Burn a ISO image on a DVDR DL using IMGBURN

Inserting a BDRE verbatim or BDR Aone causes Explorer to crash severly.

Inserting a BDRE verbatim or BDR Aone while in IMGburn or NERO causes the 2 programs to hang without the possibility to close them down but the only thing that helps is taking out the USB cable.

By removing the USB cable I am able to prevent Explorer to crash.

Conclusion is that there is a fatal issue with BDR and BD RE. There is something when the are inserted that causes crash so I think maybe there is a malfunction in the drive or maybe compatibility issue.

Is there no way you can test the drive internally?

Did you buy the tempest case with eSATA on it too?

USB will limit what that drive can do (it's too fast for it).

this is the tempest I bought = Sumvision Tempest 5.25" SATA to USB/eSATA CD/DVD/BD-ROM Enclosure

There was an extra larger cable think it s for esata but I cannot connect it to my laptop or maybe there is so kind of usb adaptor?

Do you have one of those ExpressCard slots on your laptop?

If so, pickup a Silicon Image chipset based eSATA ExpressCard from eBay and try connecting the unit via eSATA rather than USB.

Unfortunatly I dont have an expressCard Slot I have a Sony Vaio that 3 years old =(

So even with eSATA to USB cable isn t good enough?

Do you have any sort of card slot?!

It seems pointless to use an esata to usb cable on an enclosure that already supports usb output. That said, I guess it's worth a try if you have one!

Actually, maybe you could bypass the enclosure board completely (except for powering the drive) and use an sata to usb thing straight into the back of the drive.

Can you try the drive (in the enclosure and via usb as it is now) on any other machine? Just to rule out your machine as the issue.

Basically, try whatever combinations you can to try and figure out where the incompatibility is coming from.

I tried on 3 different laptops and it exactly the same problem.

Going to " my computer " the drives shows but crashes explorer. The only remedy is to pull the USB cable.

When you say that the drive is too fast for USB 2.0, shouldn t it be always not working?

Like I said previously the drives works perfectly as long as I dont feed him a BDR or BD RE.

Is it like when using BDR/BD RE it need more speed for just this format? Why does it crash windows so badly then?

Sorry, so many questions... My reseller claims esata is just a mater of burning speed.

I bought the same enclosure a month ago and it works very well with my Optaric 7260, but that is just a DVD burner and not in the need of the faster speeds of an eSATA connecting. I have it only connected through USB 2.0.

Well this is the same as I bought from your shop and that I talked about in my previous message.

Anyway, again the problem is JUST with BDR and BD-RE on 3 different machines.

You really need to test the drive in a desktop PC just using a standard sata cable.

USB 2.0 limiting the speed is only an issue during a burn / read. The drive should still work perfectly fine.

Open ImgBurn, switch to 'Write' mode.

Press the F8 key

Insert a BD-R or BD-RE in the drive.

When it gets stuck (stuff will stop scrolling in the Log window), see if you can copy + paste everything from the log window into another reply.

Failing that, leave it a while, pull the usb cable out so the I/O command aborts and then copy + paste everything from the log window.

Hi ! thanks for trying to help =)

Ok So if I start IMGburn first then choose an iso image. AFTER I connect the drive via USB it doesn t crash in the same way.

It reconize the disc and the iso BUT after getting the message " Disc needs formating " (BD-RE) it crashes and I get the message =

Terminating autoinsert thread... then the only way to close this is to pull the usb.
