Hello, i have this power calibration error problem with a new sony ad-7240s dvd burner of which i had read very good opinions about their dl dvd burning. media can't be the reason because the media is supported according to sony website and it is also the most recommended dual layer media (verbatim MKM-003-00)... what could be other reasons?? thanks for your help. this is my second burn, the first one burned ok but the buffer % was very irregular, going up and down all the time

i've thought about other possible causes, because i tried a normal (not dual layer) dvd and the burning is still weird: the buffer % drops from 96% to 2% for like a second and then bounces back up to 96%, which didn't happen with my old lg dvd burner which is IDE... this happens like 4-5 times until the burning is finished 100% and it verifies fine. I haven't tried another dual layer yet, because they are too expensive

could it be also that my motherboard (msi k9ngm from 2006-2007) is too old for a sata optical drive even if it is compatible with sata II hdd's? i also figured my system needed some cleaning up so i reinstalled my os and now don't have any other applications while burning which fixed the buffer % going up and down all the time, but still has the sudden drop i mentioned... i've also removed my sata hdd and replaced it with an ide so i could leave the sata port to the dvd burner only, but it still has that weird % drop. maybe i should install windows 7 because the windows xp driver is too old?? (i already updated the firmware)

i'm not sure about the cleaning disc, i've read they can damage the drive and this is a new burner... also, the dual layer discs are for games which usually don't work if you burn at 8x or so i've read, so any other ideas??

Optiarcs do that with buffers when they calibrate - so that's normal.

You've checked the nVidia/Intel pages for the latest drivers for your mother board?

Where are those Verbatims made in? (Should be stated on the package)
