this is frustrating. any advice ?

Update the firmware on your drive and try again.

That drive is pretty old now and could probably do with being cleaned using a cleaning disc.

 

Due to its age, it'll probably have limited support for todays media.

 

Don't waste time burning at 1x, that's 8x media remember and a modern drive (which it might be an idea to invest in) would burn it just fine at that speed.
