Got to 37% on my first try, burning at 2.5x, then i realised this might have been the problem, so i set it to 4x and got to 94% before it cocked up.

You're probably just going to tell me to get some Verbatims, but i thought i'd post anyway to see if anyone knew something more specific.

Edit* Also, this was earlier in the log:

W 11:48:02 Duplex Secure's SPTD driver can have a detrimental effect on drive performance.

Thanks.

Do they use the exact model of computer/laptop or burner?

It's all about drive/firmware/media combination incompatibility.

You have to change one of the variables in order to move somwhere.

The easyest to change is firmware and since isn't one new compatible you could try change the media.

Other than that, change the drive.

Avoid slimline/laptop burner since they arn't reliable double layer burners, regardles of manufacturer.

That's my problem then i reckon :(

Should most internal drives work well?

Go for an Optiarc 72xx series and find a nice (not too expensive) external enclosure and you'll be fine.

You can find more reviews and recommendations for o good burner on myce forum.

Thanks for all the help, i've ordered an Optiarc 7260s, just going to install it internally, which is what i should have done in the first place - i just wanted less hassle.

I'll report back when it arrives, i'll try burning again using the same discs.

From the log, using a USB drive I assumed you have a laptop.

For a computer is much more safe to use it internal.

Right, the Optiarc came today, i've installed it all fine, got the newest firmware and all that.

But it still fails, though i think i might know why. I gave my mate a few discs to try burn something on his, which failed for him too, and he normally burns without any problems. We then noticed that the discs were different from the ones he normally uses, these are 8x instead of the usual 2.4x. He couldn't get it to write anything either.

Is this likely my problem? I'm attempting to burn 360 backups by the way.

Here's a log from the latest failed attempt:

I tried writing one at 8x after reading your post (all the guides i have seen say use 2.4x or 4x), but believe it or not, it worked!

It might be just luck, or i may have solved the problem now.

But i think you're right about the discs, sometimes they may work, sometimes they may not.

Thanks for your help

2.4x is not a supported speed with that media. You can see the supported speeds in this red text.

I 16:14:32 Destination Media Type: DVD+R DL (Disc ID: RITEK-S04-66) (Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x)

Selecting 2.4x will only be the same as 4x, as it's the next available/allowed/supported write speed.
