I have been using Imgburn for quite some time and it has been working fine until now. I'm burning Blu-ray discs of movies backed up with DVDFab. I have successfully copied about 200 movies using Optical Quantum BD-R 25GB discs (PHILIP-R04-000.) Now these discs may or may not be considered "good" quality discs as compared to Verbatim discs but I wont spend $3.00 for one BD-R disc. I know the old saying you get what you pay for but these discs I have been using have been fine up until now. The disc will start to burn and then I get the error posted below. I am using 4x speed as this is the speed of the discs themselves. When I look at the disc it looks like one ring "burned" and thats it. Now here is the part I can't figure out. If I set the burn speed to MAX it burns fine, no errors. Now this may be fine, but when I look at the disc itself it doesn't look as uniform as the disc burned at 4x. The "rings" look dark and light as compared to a 4x burned disc the rings are all the same color from the center outward. Both discs play fine, but I'm afraid that the faster burned discs won't be the same quality as the slower burned ones. Once a disc is burned whether it's done at 4x or 10x does the quality drop off at a faster burned speed? I would like to know the answer to that question. I suppose I could have got some bad discs but this happened to about 5 discs in a row. If there are any settings I am missing please let me know.

Your drive shows that can burn that disc at those speeds.

 

Even if it claims it can burn it at those speeds it doesn't necessarily make a good job at every speed you select.

 

Al you can do is burn at every speed is offered and compare them. If it is possible with a drive that can do PIPO/Disc quality scanning (Lite-On). Than use that speed that produce the best job to burn in the future.

 

The colors of different shade is due to the speed change in drive burning strategy. Don't worry about that if the disc is readable/no errors.

Thanks for the reply. The problem is when I select 4x as the burn speed it fails. The only time it works consistently is at MAX speed. I suppose I could try 6x and see what happens. I just don't understand why all of a sudden this is happening?

The drive is on the way out or slight change in disc manufacturing (inconsistent quality).

I burned several discs last night at 6x speed and did not have any errors. I would still like to burn at 4x but if 6x works than I guess I will stay with what works. Is it okay to burn at a faster rate than the disc itself states?

It doesen't matter what is labeled on the disc. The drive don't know that.

 

The drive recognise the disc by the MID/dye of the disc and using a table stored in its firmware will list the burn speeds available for that MID/dye.

 

The manufacturer of the drive (usualy) may list in firmware more speeds and higher that is labeled on the disc if considered to work after the tests they make.

 

Those speeds doesn't necessarily work everytime. If a speed don't produce a good job try the next available.

 

The speed of the burn isn't important if it does the job and verify OK. Any drive that read that disc don't care at what speed was burned, all it needs is to be readable.
