ItalianSA Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) I know Verbatim's can go up to speeds from 2.4x - 8x, so why is ImgBurn saying it can only go to 2.4x? Samsung is saying my burner isn't a dual layer, which is incorrect. My discs keep failing but I think writing at 4x will fix the problem... I 10:26:07 ImgBurn Version 2.5.5.0 started! Rincewind Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) The MKM-001-00 dye is rated 2.4x. Depending on the drive/firmware it would be over sped to 4x if that particular drive/firmware cannot support 2.4x. For you it looks like it only supports 2.4x and cannot be over sped. It seems though you are running the latest firmware, but I 10:26:07 Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium x64 Edition (6.1, Build 7600) Any reason why you are NOT running SP1? http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/service-packs Also check to see if there are any updates to your chipset - http://www.ma-config.com/ After you have done that, try again on burning your disc. Rincewind Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Is your 'burner' a slimline burner by the way? Are you on a notebook? If so then don't bother trying to burn DL media, slimelines are not reliable.
ItalianSA Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 Thanks for your reply. I found out what it is; I have two different sets of verbatim's and I guess the 50pk I have only supports up to 2.4x. Is that an OK writing speed? As far as SP1, I just bought this computer a week ago and there aren't any updates for it so I haven't checked. On Best Buy's website and everywhere I search for the model of my drive, it says that it is dual layer compatible. I've contacted Samsung twice and they keep saying that my drive is not a DL. I don't know what to believe...
Rincewind Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Well if you want to be sure of the 'capabilities' of your drive. In imgburn go into ANY mode, then click tools -> drive -> capabilities and you will get a window like this and all the checks in the read/write areas is what said drive is capable for. Unfortunately for notebook drives, even though it 'can' support writing to DL media it doesn't mean that it can do it 'well'. You are better off buying a normal drive, and getting a USB2.0 enclosure for it and use that for burning your media, because other wise you will keep wasting disc after disc.
ItalianSA Posted May 23, 2011 Author Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) Okay I checked the drive capabilities and everything on there is checked the same as yours except C2 Errors is checked on mine and DVD-Ram isn't. I have an external slim but I just wanted a laptop that I could just use the internal drive to burn my backups. My slim, however, burns backups fine on my desktop. I guess I'll just have to stick to that then... thanks. EDIT: I have a friend that burns his backups on his laptop and they burn just fine. Is it truly recommended NOT to use laptop drives? ianymaty Posted May 23, 2011 Posted May 23, 2011 Most of the time the problems burning dual layer came from this drives (laptop/slimline). Funny though, people tend to blame the program. That's why isn't recommended laptop/slimline drives but if it does the job done well (burn and verify) you can use it, no problem.
