If you have a disc in the drive than the drive don't like it.

Post what you see in the log.

try a commercial CD or a DVD movie that was not "burned", but one that came complete with content from the store. if your drive can't read them, then it is bad and needs to be replaced (or the cable went bad, or the controller on your motherboard, but it would be a hardware problem).

if it can read a commercially pressed DVD or CD, but not your blanks, then it doesn't like your brand/type of discs. then try a different brand of media to burn.

you need to do as above to see if your drive still works, if it does, then either use different media, or update the firmware so it works with the media you have, but if it doesn't read then you have a bad drive or other hard connection to your computer problem.

over time and use, drives do go bad. from my experience, the laser would go weak and not burn, but it would still be strong enough to read.

you do know the shinny side usually goes DOWN in the tray? :)

Was the update succesful?

You don't need to burn a disc for update the firmware.

Just download the .exe and run it, reboot after.

You do the update in order to your (old) drive can recognize the (new) media.

If the update don't solve the problem, I suggest to invest in a new drive.

I don't know what Softpaq and recordnow you talk about.

I run it on my system to see the steps, for me it tells that: Your system is not configured with this drive. It does not need to be updated.

What was the answer to post # 7 ?

Can the drive recognise original/pressed/previously burnt discs ok?

If it doesn't work with anything, it's pointless helping you with the firmware update issue - you'd just need a new drive.

After a little search I see now what you are talking. Damn HP...

Here are the steps for the update procedure, "a little" complicated compared to other firmware updated procedures http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadInst?swfsequence=1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=ob-40562-1

I rather buy a new drive, anyway. :)

thank you for all ur help i appreciate it so much u helped me so much i dont know how to explain it in words. but i bought a new drive cuz it didnt work but u tried i liked that u tried so hard thank you so much again hope u keep helping people like that :)
