NEC DVD RW ND-3550A problem with DVD+R and booktype

Hey, I'm trying to burn a DVD+R and having DVD-rom as booktype but after the burn my drive can't read it.

After the burn this is the info I get:

Shouldn't it say DVD-ROM instead of DVD+R ? I have changed the booktype for DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM before I burn.

Now when I check back after the burn the booktype setting is "NOT active" for DVD+R, before the burn it was active (I double checked before I burned).

So, why won't it read as a DVD-ROM? :S

Also, I can't verify my burned DVD as I only get I/O errors :( Though, my drive can read DVD-ROM just fine, as I tried the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King DVD. It's just that my burns just won't become a DVD-ROM, it's still a DVD+R.

The 'Physical Format Information (ADIP)' structure will always say DVD+R, it's only 'Physical Format Information (Last Recorded)' that would/should say DVD-ROM. (For some reason, you aren't getting that bit in your disc info text)

'Current Profile' wouldn't normally change to DVD-ROM either.

In the test above I used the Y6 firmware ( http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/fwinfo/en/3550a/1Y6 ) Which I could change the booktypes but I changing firmware again to make sure.

I chose this one: http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/fwinfo/en/3550a/107bt

Like before, the DVD+R, DVD+RW and DVD+R DL are all set to DVD-ROM and are active. Last time after the burn, it changed the DVD+R to "Not active". (I should be good to go right?)

Now, I dunno if the verify will work after burning as It didn't before.

edit

HELL YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally.

This was why I've been having those reading/verifying problems for as long as I can remember!

After I uninstalled Daemon Tools AND the driver I finally get perfect graphs!

Thanks LIGHTNING UK! for the warning in ImgBurn!!!!!

from http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=11238

I will try to get rid of the SPTD driver' date=' as I have the warning as well.

edit2

SPTD driver gone but problem still persists. I tried to verify but I get I/O errors on like, every sector.

Section 4.2.12.4 NEC in this guide explains it a bit more. Basically you shouldn't need to touch those settings with a bitsetting firmware installed.

http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=6392&st=0&p=66444entry66444

Liggy's ND3550 Bitsetting Firmware 1.07 - is this the one you selected? If so, it should change the book type automatically.

Also, I can't verify my burned DVD as I only get I/O errors

Riteks are a bit of hit and miss.

I will attempt on my friend's computer, it has no problem reading these DVDs. And it will verify with no problems and if I successfully make one on this one, it should just be ready to use on my computer.

Does these bitsettings affect when you boot the computer? As I want to boot from my DVD to start the Windows installation but I haven't been able to.

Before I touch anything, I want to confirm if I can change the booktype on this burner. If anyone wonders, yes my friend's computer is a laptop.

The verification takes an awful lot of time from "Device Ready!" to operation started. Windows still can't read the disc (can't view its contents, it just appears as a blank CD drive still)

When it do starts, I start getting the I/O errors again, and notice it's still bookmarked as DVD+R even though with Liggy's ND3550 Bitsetting Firmware 1.07.

And like before, when I go back to Booktype settings, after the burn it changes DVD+R from "Active" to "NOT active". It shouldn't be a difference though I think.

I tried with one OPTODISC-OR8-00 that I had left but I get the same errors as I do with RITEK-F16-01. The fun thing is, my friend's computer can read these burned discs just fine!

Now I'm going to verify this disc I just burned on my friend's PC.

Perhaps try to set the book type option to

Drive - Permanent for +R media (that should stay active even after a reboot).

Not sure why you need to book type a Windows installation disc. That's mostly for old DVD players.

The burner is pretty old and the 3550 model was not one of the greatest one from NEC.

I 09:59:35 Device Ready!

I 10:03:34 Operation Started!

Not normal time for a burner.

Can your burner read the disc your friend burned?

Yeah, I did check that before I burned, and I did have DVD+R on permanent with DVD-ROM as its setting, but it changes back to temporary after the burn :/ If I'm not burning it doesn't change, even after reboot as you said. It only happens when I burn one disc and later check the setting.

We haven't burned yet on his burner, as I dunno if you can change the booktype on his "hp DVD RW AD-7930H"

The discs I burned can successfully boot on his PC but not on mine, when It checks if a DVD is in the drive and trying to boot it, it's only a blackscreen with a white underscore "blinking" for a few secs before it skips and goes on to the hard drive and boot Windows.

Does changing booktype also fix so you can boot the disc? As I mentioned above I get blackscreen and then it skips to the hard drive as It couldn't boot it, while it boots on other drives. Mine have to be defective, I can't see any other reason. I might just buy a new burner instead of wasting DVDs :P

edit

Yeah, I went ahead bought a new burner. A "TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S222A" and now it reads all my discs perfectly (so far atleast :P)

ImgBurn's 'Auto Change Book Type' setting will make the temp setting active and change that temp setting to DVD-ROM.

You've never needed to touch any of the book type stuff and doing so isn't going to help you anyway. If the drive is just creating unreadable coasters then you should try with better media - or buy a new drive which you appear to have now done anyway.

Ah yea, I had that "Auto Change" checked. Ironically that my "defective" drive were creating good burns (as it works perfectly on my new drive, no single reading error yet), in that case the media wasn't that bad as it still works. You can close this thread now as I solved the problem with getting a new drive :)
