rendez2k Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 I have an LG GGW-H20L YL05 drive thats got a Verbatim 2x BD-RE disc currently writing in it. The speed although set to 2x is only writing 1x. Am I correct in thinking that some drives verify as they write which would account for the slow speed? Is there a way to turn that off if so? Or is it the way the disc was formatted initially? I never get asked to reformat BD-REs - they seem to erase as they write.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Yes, it's due to the drive automatically verifying as it writes. Format the disc without spare areas and it won't do that. ImgBurn defaults to formatting without spare areas so just do a 'full erase' on it. If you still have problems, post the erase and burn logs.

Does that mean if I fully erase the disc, it won't verify as it writes? Should BD-REs have a full erase just the first time of use and then they will 'auto-erase' on subsequent writes? Also, should "prefer properly formatted disks" be enabled? I had it turned off.

Some don't even need that (pre-formatted) - but then you might want to re-format them anyway to disable spare etc. After that, the discs are just overwritten. No 'erase' takes place. I always use the default settings. They're default for a reason

Does that mean the disc is useless or can I still use it?

I have no way of knowing why exactly the format command failed, the drive's response was as vague as it could possibly be! (just saying it failed rather than why it failed) So assuming the disc status now says 'Complete' rather than 'Empty', you could just ignore it and hope for the best. Burn something and have ImgBurn verify it. If that all works ok, what's on the disc is fine. In an ideal world though, the format would go all the way through without erroring out like that.

Very odd - drive is also failing to format and write to MEI-T01-001 discs. And yet its fine with all flavors of BD-25 I've tested with it. Faulty drive maybe? Motherboard issue?
