miniman Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 (edited) Hi, Last 3 or 4 weeks I am having problems with dvd copies. Around 50% of the burns, they are skipping and freeze and shows boxes (like big pixels... sorry I don't know what to call it exactly). I always used Imgburn and Maxell DVD-r and never had these problems. How to check if the DVD burner is good or bad? My DVD burner is: http://www.directron.com/gh22np20.html Thanks Edited July 18, 2011 by miniman

Rincewind Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 (edited) Well other than your firmware already being up to date, the only thing is try cleaning the laser on your dvdplayer with a cleaning disc, and also try a different disc (preferably Verbatim +R disc ID MCC), instead of DVD-R (Disc ID: MBI 01RG40). Edited July 18, 2011 by Rincewind
miniman Posted July 18, 2011 Author Posted July 18, 2011 (edited) I didn't clean the laser yet and I will do it tomorrow cos I dont have a cleaner. But I believe that the laser is not the problem because the same dvds that skipped or freeze they skip again and again after trying them many times. And the same about the dvds that didnt skip they still dont skip after trying them many times. Then when I go back to the ones that skipped they skip again and so on and on... LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 Try burning at the other supported write speeds too. Your drive may do a better job of burning that MID at faster speeds.
miniman Posted July 20, 2011 Author Posted July 20, 2011 I tried all speeds but still having the problem.
miniman Posted July 20, 2011 Author Posted July 20, 2011 I cleaned the dvdplayer and still having the problem. Regarding Verbatim discs I don't have any but again I am sure that the problem is not The discs because they never gave me trouble before and I am using the same discs. And I tried the discs on another diffenent dvd player and they still skips and freeze so it is not my dvdplayer as well. How can I check if the dvd writer is good?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 By burning a disc and seeing if it works properly... except we already know yours doesn't! Ideally you'd burn a disc and then check the burn quality in a drive that supports PIPO/Disc Quality scanning - yours doesn't. Buy some decent discs and try again. If you don't want to take our advice then that's up to you. We are speaking from years and years of experience though.
miniman Posted July 20, 2011 Author Posted July 20, 2011 (edited) From which website I can buy some Verbatim+R disc ID MCC? Should be shipping to Europe. And +R right? Hmmm I always thought that -R is better and readable by most of DVD players out-there! Edited July 20, 2011 by miniman
Rincewind Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 (edited) http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=8000 Although that show +R DL (dual layered discs) you can also buy single layered discs too. Edited July 20, 2011 by Rincewind

LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I see no verify log there. Don't skip it! Burn at 8x, it's a better speed. In theory, that drive should be supported by Opti Drive Control for Disc Quality scanning. Give it a try and scan the disc at 4x. Then post a screenshot of the scan. Do the new discs you say are skipping still skip if you play them on the PC? Maybe it's a problem with what you're burning.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Verify as part of the burn (check the 'Verify' box on the 'Write' mode screen), not after it. Put the read speed back up to 'Max' for data (the left box of the 2) - this has to be done on the 'Verify' mode screen. Did you actually download and take a look at Opti Drive Control? Without explaining it step by step, I pretty much told you everything you needed to do. Load it up, click the 'Disc Quality' button on the left. Change the 'Speed' box to 4x and then click the 'Start' button just below it. For the screenshot you can press the floppy disc icon at the top of the program window (or use the generic method of pressing 'Print Screen' on your keyboard and 'pasting' the picture that's now in your clipboard into something like Paint).
LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 PIE and PIF levels look fine in that but the Jitter is way higher than it should be. Burn (AND verify) a disc at 8x in ImgBurn's Discovery mode and then another at 16x. Post logs from both please. Then scan them both in Opti Drive Control (@ 4x) and post screenshots.
miniman Posted July 28, 2011 Author Posted July 28, 2011 (edited) Ok here are ImgBurn's Discovery mode logs from both: The only problem is that I used Maxell DVD-r instead of Verbatim because I dont have any left. LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 If those screenshots are accurate (and round the right way), stick to burning the Maxell (RITEKF1) discs at 16x. Your drive does a better job of burning them at 16x than it does at 6x or 8x.
miniman Posted July 28, 2011 Author Posted July 28, 2011 (edited) Ok thanks I will burn @ 16x. I also found this topic with the problem exactly as mine, could this really solve my problem? <<<<I had the exact same problem. I even went and bought a new burner. Same problem. I switched to dvd-r, same problem. I bought a new dvd player, same problem. Now, here is what I ended up doing and it FIXED the skipping. First, I had way to much stuff on my computer. I was down to less that 5% free disk on my hard drive. I got rid of a lot of old stuff and got it to 50% free space. You can not run a proper disk defragmentation with less that 15% free space. So, after I cleaned off a lot of stuff (I moved a lot of it to my backup drive) I ran the system cleanup and then ran the disk defragment program (it ran for several hours). I do not have the skipping problem anymore. Also, I use top of the line blanks. Usually Verbottum dvd-r at 2x speed. The high speeds like 16x increase the chance of skipping. And the cost really isn't that different, especially if you consider the fact that you are having to trash less disks due to burning errors. Hope this helps>>>>> Edited July 28, 2011 by miniman
miniman Posted July 29, 2011 Author Posted July 29, 2011 (edited) I got rid of old stuff and got it to 25% free space, I ran the system cleanup and then ran the disk defragment program, I tried all different speeds, different media and I still got the problem. Now I really don't know what to do next! Edited July 29, 2011 by miniman
