Defenestration Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 While IB was burning the second copy in Build mode, it "hung" at 14% during "Writing Image" stage. The Time elapsed stat kept counting upwards, the drive was still recognized in Explorer, and the DVD drive still appeared to be spinning the disc. After clicking Cancel the log showed "Abort Request Acknowledged", but I assume it didn't cancel as IB was still showing the progress dialog. Finally, I switched off the external drive which sorted out IB and the log showed "14:32:36 Failed to Write Sectors 305312 - 305343 - The request was aborted.", so does this indicate a problem with the media ? LIGHTNING UK! Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Your drive/drivers crapped out, nothing more.
blutach Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 12x write speed on an external drive? That's pushing the envelope defen. Rotsa ruck. Regards
Defenestration Posted August 7, 2006 Author Posted August 7, 2006 12x write speed on an external drive? That's pushing the envelope defen. I've never had any problems before and the interface can handle up to just over 14x (according to Nero CD/DVD Speed). I guess you could say I'm impatient, hence the highest speed possible.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Highest speed possible hey.... maybe you should buy a desktop pc then and put an ide burner in it! lol
cornholio7 Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 i wouldn't bother burning usb over 8x personally
blutach Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Even that's pushing it I reckon. I saw some very good work by dbminter in the old place that gave all sorts of good explantions about the risks of semaphore timeouts in external drives, particualrly with ALI chips. Defen - your problems here and in other threads where you're losing buffer are most likely related to your need for speed. Maybe less haste, more speed, eh? Regards
lfcrule1972 Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 I feel the need...... the need for speed.......
Defenestration Posted August 8, 2006 Author Posted August 8, 2006 Re. losing the buffer, I don't understand why the problem doesn't occur with Nero.
volvofl10 Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Corn's and Blu are the mark with this one . if you want to gamble at more than 8x, then be prepared for coasters everywhere . best max speed for an ext dvd writer using USB2.0 or firewire1394 is 8x . you should get consistent results at 8x. by making the statement that you did above, youve just answered your own questions about buffer underuns.anything over 8x will/probably will cause buffer problems ( sound familiar ?). DONT believe everything Nero tells you , it lies about how long it takes to write a disc ( check the actual burn against a watch , then see how far out neros est time is) as we have been thru the speed thing before with laptops and ext drives , then im not saying any more
Kenadjian Posted August 8, 2006 Posted August 8, 2006 Yeah, I think the boys are right, you just think that nero is going faster than 8x, I would have thought a guy with your knowledge would have been all over this one.
Defenestration Posted August 9, 2006 Author Posted August 9, 2006 OK, I'll check the actual time taken for an 8x and 12x burn with Nero and compare the result with a burn at 8x and 12x in IB.
