Maximum file name characters

A while back I archived many mp3s onto blank cds. I used a program called Discjuggler. There was an option to where I could leave the file names unchanged. Most of the Mp3 file names were very long and this was the only program at that time that wouldn't truncate the file names.

 

Now what I intend to do is rip all of my mp3 cds to the hard drive then store them onto blu-ray. In this case I believe if I use the joliet file naming convention I'm still limited to only 64 characters.

 

Most file names contains both the artist and song title and the file name could contain upto or beyond 80 characters.

 

I'm not familiar with the udf file system as far as max characters in the file name. Would I be able to use Imageburn at all considering the length of the file names? Thanks.

Yes, you should use UDF 1.02. Also keep an eye on the Log window, as it'll show if files had to be renamed to comply with the selected filesystem.

Thank you. I did a test using a Verbatium BR-RW disc using udf v. 1.02

 

File names were 100 characters long:

 

123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-.mp3

123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-123456789-.txt

 

BR drive read the files exactly as they should be.

If you look on the tabs found under 'Advanced' -> 'Restrictions' (all found in the main window when you're in Build mode), you'll find various settings to allow different length names.

 

They're pretty obvious for ISO9660 and Joliet, but for UDF, the one that matters is the one that controls Unicode support. When Unicode is disabled, it doubles the number of characters a file name can contain - but obviously you can't then have filenames containing any Unicode characters.
