Ultra Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Hi, I think I have encountered a bug in ImageBurn - at least it is an error that I cannot explain. When I create copies of my Blu-Rays (all ripped via AnyDVD HD) I usually use very long labels for the Blu-Rays. This has always worked and there has never been a coaster for a BD-R25 or a BD-R50. Now I have produced 5 (!) coasters here for 2 specific movies: Mesrine: Part 1 (Killer Instinct) and Mesrine: Part 2 (Public Enemy). Both retail Blu-Rays are BD-R25. I ripped them via AnyDVD HD and attempted to burn Part 1 onto a BD-R25, by simply dragging the folders into ImageBurn (which configures all settings for you). The original folder name of the AnyDVD HD rip was "MESRINE_PT1". As always, ImageBurn suggested that folder name as the label, but as I said before I use my own labels. The label I entered was "Mesrine: Part 1 - Killer Instinct (2008) - Blu-Ray". The burn produced a write error at 96%. I suspected the colon to be a problem so I tried again exchanging the colon with a hyphen: "Mesrine - Part 1 - Killer Instinct (2008) - Blu-Ray". Produced another coaster at 96% (write error). Same problem occurred with Part 2, I get write errors at 96% over and over - whatever I use as my custom label (I shortened the label, thinking char LENGTH might be an issue). On my last try, I used the original folder name of the rip (MESRINE_PT1) as the label and the burn went through perfectly w/o a problem. Same right away afterwards for the second movie. --> this leaves me to the assumption that all 5 coasters that Image burn produced (--> write errors at 96%) are related to my custom labels for the Blu-Ray burn 2 other facts: * I used the same brand for all burns - which had prior to this problem never produced a coaster * the length of my custom label can also not be a problem as I have successfully burned Blu-Rays before with longer labels Please report back here if you think I have an error in my workflow, otherwise... please fix ! Thanx. - M
LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 The length of labels has nothing to do with anything. The drive doesn't know or care about what you're burning... data is data. If you have a problem, post a log so we can see what's going on.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 Use Opti Drive Control to do a disc quality scan (at 4x, 6x, 8x) on that disc. Then post a screenshot of the results please. Remember you are burning that BD-R at maximum speed there - it's unlikely to produce great results.
Ultra Posted September 20, 2011 Author Posted September 20, 2011 (edited) lightning, I don't think the max speed has anything to do with it (although anything is - as always - possible), b/c here's the history of the problem: > I never change the default settings in ImgBurn * burned 4 coasters with max speed settings with my custom long label (2 x Mesrine part 1 movie & 2 x Mesrine part 2 movie) * after that - confused that it did not work - I burned 2 BD-R 25's (2 different movies) successfully - max speed settings as well * confident again (considering it MIGHT have been 4 bad discs in a row), I tried another burn of Mesrine part1 - max speed - unsuccessful again * then - finally - I kept the original folder name (as stated in my original post) - and burned successful both Mesrine part 1 & Mesrine part 2 - both max speed * since then I have burned another 4 movies successfully onto these BD-R 25's discs - with max speed --> all discs came from the SAME SPINDLE ------ Regarding your suggested test, 4 out 5 coasters could not be read by Opti Drive Control - b/c the discs are unreadable as I did not finalize the track after the write error occurred --> on the last coaster (#5) I did finalize the track after the write error occurred, this disc is readable. I ran all three test in Opti Drive Control, here are the pics: Please find the 3 images atatche3 to this post. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanx. - M Edited September 20, 2011 by Ultra
LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Right so it's complete and utter rubbish after the 17.5 GB point. That's the problem right there. Regardless of what's worked or hasn't worked in the past, try knocking the write speed down a bit to 8x (or even 4x). Burn another one and do another scan. You should also try with some other discs - that don't use the 'RITEK-BR2-000' dye/MID.

You should also try with some other discs - that don't use the 'RITEK-BR2-000' dye/MID. well, as stated in my other posts, I did 6 successful burns after the last coaster - 2 with the problematic movies Mesrine part 1 & part 2... they all work, but (as stated in my other posts) I had to use the original folder name as the disc label for the Mesrine discs... the 17.5 GB mark is where the write error occurred - for all 5 coasters always at the same mark (as stated before) until I changed the label... not quite sure why I would burn the 2 problematic movies again, they work now b/c I used the original folder names... also, don't really see no reason to buy another brand, since these were the only 5 coasters in over 140 burns with these discs, only occurring with these 2 specific movies, the label turning out to be the problem... so (IMO) if you look at the history of this problem, the chances are basically zero that this is media related... IMO: this is a specific problem with these 2 movies - Mesrine part 1 & Mesrine part 2...
LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 You're entitled to your opinion. I'm just saying that it's simply not possible for a drive to have an issue due to the length of file names, volume labels etc. Scan some of the discs you've burnt successfully since doing the ones that failed and see how their quality scan graphs look. If you get a massive increase in LDC / BIS at the end of the disc like in the ones above, I wouldn't trust those discs at all.
