I am having problems with DVD-RWs since I brought a new PC and I'm not sure if it is the drive or the disks. The disks burn fine but I get L-EC errors when the verify process starts. I had some Sony DVD-RWs that didn't work so I got rid of them and got some TDK disks. These seem to be better and were working but I'm starting to get the errors again.

I have seen these errors posted on the forums and they are to do with bad sectors on the disk but it just seems odd to me that both the Sony and TDK disks have bad sectors. Maybe I just have bad luck.

Here is the log of my latest burn:

OK, so I erased that disk again and got it to burn successfully. I did notice the first time that the device buffer dropped to about 40% while burning. Maybe this was the problem?

Update your burner's firmware and try again. You could also try with high quality media such as Verbatim discs. Another option would be using a DVD+RW (notice it's "plus" RW) disc.

Thanks for the advice - I had tried updating the firmware but it told me the firmware was up-to-date. The link you gave me worked so thanks. I have burned a disk since then and it worked so we'll see how I go.

Thanks again.

I'll give it another go. This is the second lot of disks - the first disks I had problems with were Sony, these ones are TDK. I find it hard to get other brands, might see if I can get some rewritable Verbatim discs somewhere.

Do you think it is the disc or is it more likely to be the drive firmware? I could take the drive back because it's under warranty.

Posted

Worked fine that time.

I have nothing but trouble with all DVD-RW discs I have tried - either they have errors when verifying or they have errors when I try to read them on my DVD player. You'd think they would have figured out by now how to make a reliable disc.

Thanks for your help Lightning.
