Ch3vr0n Posted November 20, 2011 Posted November 20, 2011 I hope this is the correct section. I've just bought me a brand new BD-RE SL and popped it into my BH10LS20 for burning. From what i know a standard disc holds 23.3 GB. However with the default? settings IMGBurn used windows explorer shows the maximum capacity of 22.5GB. That's roughly 800MB undersized and enough to render the disc unuseable for some iso's made by BD-Rebuilder that slightly superseed that 22.5GB mark. Since it was brand new it came empty and unformatted. Below is the IMGBurn log & discs specs. Disc was formatted & immediately followed by an iso burn to disc. Speed also is something weird, according to the disc properties 10.338kb/sec is 2.4x. However the disc gets burnt at 10.512 KB/s wich is 2.3x? Different drives use different values to mean the same thing and so it makes using a single calculation to go from KB -> Speed a bit hit and miss. The speed descriptors reported by the drive are also only accurate to +- 10%. It's caused by the program using a 2nd calculation (based on a slightly different 1x speed) if the first doesn't end up at a whole number (i.e. 2x, 3x, 4x etc, because speeds typically are). I've now made the program only use the result of the 2nd calculation if its result is a whole number, otherwise it just sticks with the result of the 1st one. Compare those speed values/calculations to what something like an iHBS112 returns... They both end up with 12219392 sectors available for use. 12219392 * 2048 = 25,025,314,816 bytes / 1024 = 24,438,784 KB / 1024 = 23,866 MB / 1024 = 23.306640625 GB So there's your 23.3 GB.
Ch3vr0n Posted November 21, 2011 Author Posted November 21, 2011 I did that math myself too. I just don't understand why the BD-R shows up with 23.3GB and the BD-RE as 22,5. If the amount of sectors is the same then the BD-RE should also show in explorer as having a disc capacity of 23.3GB. I check when IMGB was done with formatting and before the ISO burn began and it showed as 22.5GB effective capacity. Is there a setting in IMGB i can change (reformat) to change the BD-RE available disc size to 23.3GB? That 800MB difference has to go somewhere

We'll see what IMGBurn has to say when i try to burn it to the RE. I visit my video store weekly on friday, they know to expect me for new releases . With some luck i'll be able to report back during or after the weekend. Thx for the support/explanation so far
