a burn speed of 0.6 ?? I have used the writer (usb) and discs (Philips DVD+R 1-16x speed) in the past without any problems. What am I missing here?

It looks like a USB 1.0 (rather than 2.0) issue to me.

 

Try another USB port/cable.
