I'm sick of burning expensive Blu-Ray "Coasters" - Help Please?

I have now made my third expensive £5 a time coaster, using Blu-ray discs, due to an issue I cannot figure out.

When burning an already created .iso file on my PC to my Blu-Ray Writer, the process keeps failing each time part way through, with the errors I will list in a moment.

I was advised to try different media (which I have now done to no avail) and then advised to give up using CyberLink, and instead rely on ImgBurn to burn my files - again though, it turns out, to no avail.

My Blu-Ray Writer is a LiteOn iHBS212. The latest media I have tried is now currently Verbatim 4x Single Layer Blu-Ray BD-R discs.

Like I asy, it can do anything up to about half my disc, before failing.

Here's my latest ImgBurn log/data for help:

I/O Error!

Device: [0:2:0] ATAPI iHBS212 2 5L08 (G:) (ATA)

That's the error message above^

And here's my log (it finished only because I cancelled after numerous manual attempts, and then told it to finalise what there was of the disc anyway):

Thanks to you all in advance for any help you can give.

There's a firmware update available for your drive.

http://www.firmwarehq.com/Lite-On/iHBS212%2B2/files.html

W 20:29:28 Failed to Write Sectors 5595232 - 5595263 - Reason: No Additional Sense Information

This is the initial (and importantly) error message - but it's not one you should be seeing.

I'm inclined to say this could be driver related.

What SATA controller is the drive attached to?

Right click the drive selection box and click 'Family Tree'. Close the prompt and copy + paste the info from the log window.

edit: oops, took too long to reply :)

Ok, thanks for replying guys.

Just to advise you... I have done a few changes...

I have now updated to latest drive firmware...

I have now physically disconnected my original DVD-Writer drive, so that now there is only ONE signle Optical drive on my pc - the new Blu-Ray Writer.

I have updated to the latest ImgBurn version.

I will now re-try, but fully expect to make yet another coaster. Just for additional info, I have a Quad Core Pentium, with 4GB of Ram, and I close down all none essential programs and background stuff using Task Manager/Processes, before attempting a burn, just to rule out any other issues. Finally, I cannot update to Win 7 SP1, as I am one of the rare few for whom the install fails, and all the relevant MS KB articles relating to this are to no avail - I simply cannot get SP1 to install for me no matter what I try.

So here goes trying this again, but this time with new firmware, only one optical drive attached to my PC, and with latest version of ImgBurn...

I'll let you know how it goes...

Does anyone know what the problem actually is...?

This time I made it further to 64% but it's now cost me a bomb in wasted blu-ray discs that have now failed...

Can you please provide me with the info I asked for in my previous post.

Oh and invest in some BD-RE discs.

My bad indeed - I thought I already had, but I've looked and your right, I didn't post the info you asked.

So having done what you said, this is the result:

I 16:14:25 Family Tree:

I 16:14:25 -> ACPI x64-based PC

I 16:14:25 -> Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System

I 16:14:25 -> PCI bus

I 16:14:25 -> NVIDIA nForce Serial ATA Controller (VEN_10DE&DEV_07F4 - NVIDIA)

I 16:14:25 -> CD-ROM Drive (ATAPI iHBS212 2 SCSI CdRom Device) (Bus Number 2, Target Id 2, LUN 0)

A few important points though...

First, the step you asked, I did with just an audio CD in my drive, though I presume this makes no difference to it showing the info you needed about the driver though?

Next, I have recently been having issue with the SMU Drivers on my PC, so last night I updated ALL my motherboard drivers, and that will likely also have included the SATA driver one. So the info posted above is SINCE my last however many fails/coasters.

Also, I have now also managed to finally get SP1 installed.

So my system is now:

Latest version of ImgBurn

Latest FW for my Blu-ray Writer

Windows NOW on SP1

SATA Drivers updated to the latest available nVidia Drivers.

I am loathe to attempt a new burn however until I can source and test using REwriteable Blu-Ray Discs, instead of wasting a BD-R disc time after time.

Is there anything in the info I posted above about the drivers however, that shed any light on my issue?

  • 2 weeks later...

Further to my last post above...

I finally got some BD-RE discs arrive, both Sony and Verbatim.

So I tried yet again to burn an .iso file to disc.

And yet again I got LOADS of errors as before - In fact even before the burn, the very process of formatting the disc met with loads of errors. The only difference being that this time, as it was a re-writeable disc, instead of failing altogether on each error, as it does on BD-R only discs, it was of course able to continue the burn.

And the end result was a complete disc that I was able to verify worked in my Blu-Ray Player.

So again, after looking at my last post, and my new log below, can anyone shed any light whatsoever on what my problem is, and whether i have a defective drive or what?

You need to try the drive in another PC that's known to work properly (or on a PCI card that supports optical drives - a Silicon Image 3512 chipset based card for example).

It still looks like a driver issue to me. Drives don't really error out without returning a specific error code - so you'd never get 'No additional sense information available'.

As such, I'd say the drivers are losing the error code or the error never really existed (from the drive anyway) in the first place.

Whilst your BD-RE burn might look ok, it's probably missing data around the sectors where those errors were reported. You should verify the burn to check everything is where it should be.
