So I've been happily using ImgBurn for a long time, burning CD-R and DVD+R disks. I was using version 2.5.0.0. The last DVD+R I successfully burnt was actually done by the embedded burner in Corel VideoStudio X2. It was a Memorex DVD+R disk, which according to "DVD Identifier" is made by Ricoh Co, Ltd, Type R03, Rev 004. (I determined this running DVD Identifier on my ThinkPad T43p.)

Then I started a spindle of AmazonBasics DVD+R disks, made by Advance Media Limited, Type 003. VideoStudio crashed part way through writing it. So I switched to having VideoStudio write a .iso file, and tried to burn using ImgBurn 2.5.0.0. No joy, hang at "Getting book type...".

I have tried upgrading ImgBurn from 2.5.0.0 to 2.5.6.0.

I have upgraded the Sony DW-Q120A PATA DVD drive from firmware DYS2 to DYS3.

I have tried another Sony DW-Q120A PATA DVD drive with firmware DYS2.

I have tried a new spindle of Memorex DVD+R disks, these made by Ritek, type F16, Rev 001.

I have bought a new Asus DRW-22B3S PATA DVD drive.

None of these have changed the symptoms.

The AmazonBasic disks burn fine on the Matshita UJ-842z drive on my ThinkPad.

When I run DVD Identifier on the troubled machine, it hangs at "** Initiating ARPI Retrieval Method 1 (Original ADIP)". This includes trying to read back the ADIP information on the last old Memorex DVD+R I successfully burnt.

(So far as I can tell, CDBurnerXP also hangs at the same point, but it has much inferior debug information.)

I suppose it's possible that the Asus drive is also a "lemon", and can't burn either of these brands of disks. Well, at least it can't read the ADIP information. The Asus drive was made in September 2011. There don't appear to be any firmware updates for it on the web. I can return the drive to MicroCenter within 30 days, but it's the only PATA DVD drive they carry, all the rest are SATA or USB.

ImgBurn 2.5.6.0 is perfectly happy burning a CD-R disk from data files, on either the old Sony drive, or the new Asus drive.

The PATA drive is on a IDE bus connected via a Promise Ultra 66 IDE controller. (PCI Vendor 105A Device 4D38.) It is the slave device, the master is a Plextor CD recorder. They are using cable select. Disconnecting the Plextor drive doesn't change the symptoms. I've tried both the master and slave connectors on the cable.

Here is the ImgBurn log:

Posted (edited)

Just ran a test I hadn't tried since putting in the Asus DVD drive. CDBurnerXP 4.4.0 can burn both the Advance Media Limited (AmazonBasics) and Ritek (Memorex) DVD+R discs.

(I hadn't tried it because each failure results in a 10 minute reboot cycle. Too many startup tasks.)

There's nothing I can do about your machine hanging on certain I/O commands. (Not sending them in the first place isn't really an option :) )

I've only ever used Silicon Image and ITE based PCI IDE cards. Others may or may not have issues with optical drives - most are designed for hdds and do not fully support the command set used by optical drives.

Do you have any other IDE ports you can attach the drive to?

Maybe you should have ditched IDE, got a new SATA PCI card (Silicon Image 3512 chipset based - ~£10 off ebay) and an SATA drive - where you of course then have loads more choices.

Thanks for the response.

I was querying just in case there was some issue with the form of issuing the command to read ADIP info. But with DVD Identifier having the same problem, it's indeed more likely some sort of evil hardware problem. I suppose CDBurnerXP doesn't issue this particular command, and that's why it works.

I do have two motherboard IDE ports on the Intel D850MV motherboard. I could swap the second motherboard port (currently a Pioneer DVD reader) with the port for the two burning drives. Probably would need to adjust the drive lettering when that's done. (This arrangement was originally chosen so that the DVD reader on the second IDE port could be the boot drive for OS installs, with the first IDE port going to the boot hard disk. But I could boot fine from the Plextor instead.)

I suppose I could return the Asus drive and get a USB-connected drive? Would a Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive work? (Yeah, I know there are cheaper ones, but I may be migrating to Mac.)

Why can't you just ditch the Pioneer and put the Asus in its place? You don't need to 'save' your burner just for burning. Save electricity and remove the Plextor too.

Personally I'd steer clear of slimline drives and USB drives in general. Slimline drives are rubbish burners and USB has its own issues (semaphore timeouts).
