Stronghold Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Hey, I'm new at burning CDs/DVDs. I just burned a Windows 7 Ultimate installation DVD but it doesn't seem to work on my computer. I'm using our laptop to type this. My comp's motherboard broke(after 6 yrs) so we had to buy a new one. My comp is also having this "Windows Failed to start" issue and is a also the reason why I wanted to reformat my PC again. I followed every step in this guide: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=11194 using our laptop. I tried putting the DVD on my comp, it reads it but doesn't seem to boot. I also tried restarting the comp but same thing happened. Any ideas on what to do? I've already searched the forums and got tired of searching. XP Here is the ImgDisk log btw: I 00:08:56 ImgBurn Version 2.5.6.0 started! LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 A bump...seriously? Some people do sleep you know. Did you select to boot from the cd/dvd drive when the machine booted up? You could either do that via the bios or maybe some one time boot menu.

I just inserted the disk in the cd/dvd drive. Also, how do I access the BIOS?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 You're asking questions you could easily find answers to yourself via a quick Google search. You normally get into the motherboard bios by pressing F2 or Del when the machine reboots/is turned on. F12 will bring up a boot menu on some motherboards. Once you're in the bios, look for boot order/priority and make sure cd/dvd is *before* hdd if you want the machine to attempt to boot from a cd/dvd rather than the hdd (where it would then load Windows).

I did what you said but the only thing listed in the BIOS is my old OS. I tried reinserting the disk again but same thing happens.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 The BIOS isn't going to list an operating system... are you sure you were in the right place?!
Stronghold Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 I tried pressing Del instead of F2. Now, I'm on CMOS Setup utility. I dunno where to start from here...
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Like I said in post #5, you're looking for something related to boot order / priority. You'd normally have options to set the order of booting from various devices such as floppy drives, optical drives, hard disk, network, USB etc. Knowning which brand of bios (cmos) you have would help.

Well, as it said on the screen, it's Geforce 9400GT VGA BIOS. My new motherboard is MSi G41M-P28, just in case you need to know.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 That's your graphics card bios string. The G41M-P28 seems to use Ami Bios. Try reading this - http://forums.techarena.in/guides-tutorials/1066408.htm It's something I found after simply Googling 'ami bios change boot order'.

Try reading this - http://forums.techarena.in/guides-tutorials/1066408.htm It's something I found after simply Googling 'ami bios change boot order'. I followed the procedure. Still nothing. I keeps saying "Windows failed to start" over and over again. I'm gonna try to burn another DVD and see if that will work. Btw, if I put my previous DVD(win7 dvd) that I burned back into my laptop, will it try to reformat my laptop?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Then I can only assume there's something not quite right about your disc. How did you get the source files you used to build it in the first place? You'd normally always have a working original disc or an ISO you just burn 'as-is' with these things. Sometimes the downloads from Microsoft are the raw files zipped up... but then you wouldn't have the 'Boot' folder (which you'd need). Your previous DVD won't do anything without you telling it to.

I got the files from ThePiratebay.org and the file was really reliable. A lot of positive comments were there. When i finished downloading it, I extracted all the files in one new folder and use that folder for burning. Just like what was said in the guide.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Can you get your PC to boot and other discs? Try an ISO that's already known to be bootable (like a Ubuntu Live CD or Memtest86+). If you can't get that to boot either, it must be something you're doing wrong in/with the BIOS.
Stronghold Posted January 29, 2012 Author Posted January 29, 2012 I made another disk but it still won't work. Btw, does the etfsboot file has to be named, "ETFSBOOT" or "ETFSBOOT.COM"?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 That depends on your Windows setting for showing file extensions. The file would be called etfsboot.com, but you may or may not be able to see the .com extension when you look at it via Explorer. Did you actually try what I said about using a known bootable Linux Live CD or the Memtext86+ CD?

I'm thinking something is wrong with either my burning methods/cds or my CD/DVD-ROM.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 29, 2012 Posted January 29, 2012 If those images I mentioned burn and verify ok, there should be no problem booting them - assuming you're doing things correctly in your BIOS regarding boot order priority.
