LIGHTNING UK! Posted June 18, 2012 Share Posted June 18, 2012 Your drive is having problems burning to the media you're using. It's reporting a 'Write Error' as it attempts to burn it. Although the 2nd attempt looks (semi) successful, my guess is that the disc is still showing up as blank/empty. You could try burning at 4x or 6x. You've already tried the only other supported speed of 10x (by selecting 'MAX' in the program) As the drive is probably 8 or so years old now, it might be worth giving it a clean with a cleaning disc. And by "better media" do you mean the discs I'm trying to write to might be the problem? They're Memorex CD-R 52X 700MB 80min. I know there's a huge price variation between one CD-R and another, but I never thought that would affect them as far as just backing up files on them? I just have a couple of 'wet' ones where you apply some solution to the brushes and set it going (either by selecting a certain track on the disc or by clicking a button in the program that autoruns). Being a laptop drive, you could probably clean it manually if you're* really careful*. Use the same solution on the end of a cotton bud and wipe it around/over the lens. I'm sure there will be a guide for doing just that if you Google it. And by "better media" do you mean the discs I'm trying to write to might be the problem? Yes. Well, it's some problem between your drive, its firmware and the media you're using. They're the only things that come into it - 'it' being getting a successful burn. You change one or more of them until you find a combination that works. The brand name stamped on discs doesn't really mean very much. Different brands could be using the exact same discs. Yours are actually made by CMC. I 11:06:35 Destination Media Type: CD-R (Disc ID: 97m26s66f, CMC Magnetics Corp.) Taiyo Yuden (Victor JVC) make the best discs I've used. Sometimes Verbatim will put their name to Taiyo Yuden discs if you can't find any sold under the Taiyo Yuden (Victor JVC) name itself. This all started because my main computer, a Dell desktop, got a virus that took over administrative control and would allow me to do anything. One solution I was told was to write a bootable disc on another computer, (that's where this old ThinkPad comes into play), and then reboot the Dell with the bootable disc in the drive using the CD-ROM drive as the first boot. After several days of messing around with that (with no success), I gave up. So the Dell has been taking up space in a closet for 6 months and I've been using this little rinky-dink laptop. I filled the hard drive up pretty quickly on here so I decided to back everything up onto discs and re-install the O/S back to factory. I can't get my files off my Dell so I can reformat that one: I have no idea if it's the virus causing the problems, or if the software for the DVD-ROM is corrupted, or if the CD/DVD drive itself is screwed up. And now I can't write anything to a disc from this laptop either. Kind of frustrating. But thanks again for your help.
