Hi there,

I just wanted to explain some of the experiences I've had since yesterday using some dual layer disks.

To be clear, I'm well used to burning disks, having owned my first CD burner since 1997, and have burned many many DVDs, mainly dual layer in recent years without issue, and understand the ins and outs of burning disks... indeed up until yesterday my DVD burning program of choice was still DVD Decrypter, which I've used continuously since before the project was stopped.... mainly because I loved those .mds files ensuring my burned layer break was in the correct position.

Blurays is something new to me though. I just purchased a bluray burner last week at last, and with it I purchased a handful of single layer write once and rewritable disks, and a couple of dual layer rewritables, and a pack of write once dual layer.

Up until yesterday I'd only used the 25gb rewritable disk, 3 times so far, no issues, no errors, all brilliant.

Yesterday I had a rental disk here, and even though I wasn't interested in having a copy of it, I thought it would be a bit of practice to back it up, to see if I could, and if it would play in my standalone players.... as I said, I hadn't tried a dual layer disk yet.

So....

I ripped the disk using anyDVD. No issues there. Quite a big image.

So far, Nero is what I've used to burn my blurays.. both a data disk, and burning <25gb ISOs.

When I tried to burn the image it just failed immediately. Sadly I forget the exact error, but it didn't even start... it went through the initial motions, and said it was going to burn at 2x, and then burn failed. If I tried to format the disk, I was getting a strange write protect error.

It did look to me like the image was slightly too big for the disk, so after some Googling I was reading about the format without spare areas function of Imgburn, so I downloaded it and installed it.

The first thing I did was try to burn the image I'd made, assuming that Imgburn would erase/format the disk as required.

This was my first attempt at using Imgburn.

After this, I removed the blank disk from the drive, reinserted it and tried to erase it again.

Same as above, write protect errors.

Confused, I then thought I'd try using Windows to erase/format the disk.

Opened Computer, right clicked the drive, selected format... the disk was formatted, successful, and then I loaded Imgburn again, and tried another quick erase. This time, after Windows has formatted the drive, it worked. As you'll see in the log, I was so surprised it worked (after also having failures in Nero beforehand) that I did actually quick erase it twice, just to make sure ;)

Then I realised of course that it was only going to give me the format without spare areas if I did a full format, which I then did... which did, as you'll see, take rather a while, including the zeroing. I WAS then finally able to burn my image onto the disk, for which I was delighted and was going to write to these forums anyway to say thank you for such a great program.

This log directly proceeds finally managing to get the disk to format, by using the Windows format as mentioned above. No more write-protect errors.

I didn't have time for a verify, but I was happy to have got the image burned, and I just tried the opening few seconds in a standalone player to confirm my player would play the disks.

TODAY.

Today I thought I'd just format the other dual layer disk I have here handy, so that when I do want to use it, I won't have to wait 4 hours for it to full format etc.

I literally opened the wrapping on this brand new disk, inserted it into the drive, went straight to Imgburn this time and tried a full erase with the same settings as the previous disk the day before

Imgburn did appear to burn something on the disk, I could see a thin line in the dye where a small amount of something had been written.

I thought I'd try the previous Format the disk with Windows trick again.... wouldn't work.

When I tried to use Windows Format, it said I couldn't format this type of disk.

When I tried to erase the disk with windows, it gave an error.... sorry, without a log I cannot remember exactly what it said, but it was something like media format unrecognised... but the point is, it failed and wouldn't even let me try to format the disk.

I reloaded Imgburn and at first I tried a quick erase just to see what would happen, it failed as you'll see in the log shortly.

I then tried another full erase.... remember, this is the same disk that failed above... this time it appeared to work perfectly.... until 2 hours and 18 mins later, just as it was finishing... 99% done....

Phew, it's taken me all day to format one disk! ;)

However, after having all these issues, it reminded me that I hadn't had time yesterday to verify the test image on the other disk.

So, I loaded the other disk into the drive, loaded Imgburn, attempted to verify.... the drive sounded like it was struggling.... it span up a little, then span down and the read speed dropped, then it span up again and started reading normally, except that the log showed that it failed to read some sectors - No seek complete....

.... so I aborted the verify and started it again, while the disk was still spinning at full speed.

It verified perfectly.

Which is when I loaded this forum, signed up for an account and am making this post.

Strange errors. I had issues with both disks, trying to format them... yet after multiple attempts they did work.

I guess I've already said enough, I was just trying to give as much info as possible.

I know it's possible to say that it's the disks that are crap... but then why do they work in the end?

Maybe my drive is faulty? It works well with single layer disks... my old NEC 3500AD was always, and still is a brilliant drive for burning single layer disks... less reliable on dual layer though, whereas my old Optiarc drive never makes a coaster on dual layer disks, even cheapo Mirror ones.

But in the end, I did get my disks formatted, I did burn that big image, and it did verify on the second attempt.

It did seem like the disk just hadn't spun up properly on the first verify attempt, which is why I pressed verify again while the disk was still spinning at high speed the second time, and it just worked.

I wonder what would cause the second disk to firstly fail to format almost immediately, and then fail at 99% (I did observe the drive making an almost ticking noise just before the failure... however, I observed the same clicking sounds during the final format at 99%, which didn't fail... and then went on to write the zeros.

I'm guessing the disks are now 100% usable. The burned image passed verify, so I guess that means it should play perfectly (I don't actually want to watch it, as I said it was just a test of a disk a family member had happened to have rented)

I'm kind of concerned now about my write once dual layer disks. I don't really want them failing. It would just be nice to know a potential cause of the errors. Incidentally I've already downloaded the latest Daemon Tools, which claims no longer required SPTI, so I will replace that on the weekend and uninstall SPTI.

As a final remark, THANK YOU VERY MUCH to the author.

The format without spaces option is a great one, as well as the rest of the option in this powerful yet simple piece of software.

I'm kind of glad that the first image I tried to burn wouldn't fit on the disk, as it made me learn first time about the formatting without spaces.

I have one further question, however, if I may... regarding the full erase procedure.

I noticed that during the burn the first 25% the disk would be spinning slowly with the LED flashing, then from 25% to 50% the disk would spin up and stay on... same again at 75%. I'm guessing that it's writing 25% and then verifying it? Then doing the next 25% and so on?

Is there a way to disable this? I left the zeroing option enabled because I guessed it would prove whether 100% of the disk was writable, but if it's verifying as it full erases, then I guess it doesn't need to?

Just trying to cut down that 4 hour wait.

I hope the disks continue to work well, now that they've been full erased.

Thanks for reading, much appreciated,

Kind regards,

Vin.

by the way, I realise maybe my choice of blank disk wasn't the best.

As I said, blurays are new, so to begin with I just purchased what I could. These two BD-RE DL disks are Sony disks, and I simply purchased them to go with a Sony drive, as I figured that they'd stand a chance of being compatible, and I read good reviews on Amazon when I bought them... just because they're both Sony though, of course, doesn't really mean anything ;)

Maybe I shouldn't have purchased the slim USB powered drive. I know my laptop DVD burner is crap... part of the reason I wanted a USB one is so I could also use it on my laptop, and as a bootable CD drive on other systems. However, I did go in with the assumption that if they say it's going to work with a certain type of disk, then it would work! It says it supports BDXL 100gb disks too... phew, I'd HATE for one of those burns to fail, at the price they are.

Still, if you buy something, you expect it to work... not too much to ask, eh? ;)

Formatting a BD-RE is a two part process: first ImgBurn sends the 'format disc' command and then waits for the burner to say it's finished, so this part is handled entirely by the burner; after that, ImgBurn writes zeroes to the whole disc to make sure all the sectors are writeable and left empty.

You only need to full format/erase a BD-RE just once, or when you want to change the 'with spare areas' or 'without spare areas' format of the disc. After that you can just overwrite the disc, not even quick erase is needed (for future reference this is also true for DVD+RW and DVD-RAM media).

As for the failed burns it means the drive has poor support for those discs, and the failed verifies confirm this by the difficulty of reading those burned discs. A firmware update could add better support for them and newer media, so I think it's worth e-mailing/calling Sony and asking for newer firmwares (I've looked around and didn't find any).

In the future, if you don't need a slim drive for portability/space/weight reasons, you can buy a normal-sized burner and mount it in an external enclosure: some of them even have multiple external interfaces (USB 3.0 / eSATA / Thunderbolt) and coolers to keep temperature controlled :)

Hey there, thanks very much for taking the time to read my post, and respond to me.

Yeah, I understand the two part format process, although I obviously wasn't being quite clear enough about what I meant regarding the format process.

Ignoring the zeroing part altogether, before it gets to that it does the format, obviously.

During the format, the first 25% the disk is spinning slow, my LED is blinking.... meaning it's writing.

from 25% to 50% the disk spins up fast, and the LED remains constantly lit.... as if it's reading... so I guess, verifying.

Then again from 50%-75% the disk speed slows and the light blinks, and the final 25% the disk spins up, and the light remains on.

So I just wondered if the process was doing a verify during the format, negating the need for the zeroing afterwards (at least on a brand new disk)

Yeah, I did check for firmwares. Before purchase I read multiple reviews of this drive, and they all said it was reliable.

I also read reviews of these Sony BD-RE DL disks, and read that they worked great, and were entirely compatible with the previous "500" model of this burner, so I therefore assumed it would work great in the 600.

I knew a full sized burner would be better. I've had issues in the past with crap laptop drives, but had just hoped that technology would've moved on a bit since then, plus I did spend quite some time searching for and reading reviews for this model.... maybe in the wrong places ;) I had just hoped that by using an external drive it would just be a bit slower than a full sized version.

Half of the reason I chose this is because I'm physically disabled, and I find it very difficult to get into my system these days... so after reading positive things about the USB version, I thought I'd give it a go, plus as I said, it means I can use it on my laptop / netbook etc.

But yes, this is my first, and last USB drive.... and in the future, I shall most definitely purchase an internal drive again.

I also realise media can be an issue. For DVDs I only use Taiyo Yuden single layer, and I have a mixture of Verbatim dual layer for important things, and Mirror disks for less important (though I've never had a coaster, and never had one degrade after a few years) I'm just a bit new to bluray, and the cost of some of the media is just so prohibitively expensive as to not make it worthwhile to me at this moment. I paid nearly £10 each for those Sony BD-RE DL disks!

I hope they continue to function well now.

I'll also try the drive on my laptop and see if I get the same errors. I expect it'll be the same, as I said, I've never had an issue with DVDs or CDs.

It did occur to me that maybe it's a USB power issue, so that would rule that out if I try it in another system.

I did find it odd that Sony never seem to have released an updated firmware for this drive. I couldn't find any firmwares for download at all, not even the current version... or any custom firmwares. I will write to them and ask, though I doubt it'll do any good ;)

The drive is still pretty new, so I'll also consider returning it as not fit for purpose.

Thanks again for your response,

and my thanks again to the author of both DVD Decrypter and Imgburn, my two most valuable pieces of burning software since release. As I said, I still have DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 installed for DVD ISO burning (Well, I'll swap to Imgburn now, finally)

Cheers!
