Cannot lock volume...handle is invalid

After years of boringly successful writes, ImgBurn is suddenly unable to lock the device, and is turning out coasters instead of well-written discs.

Looking at the filters (whatever they are) I see as the UpperClassFilter siremfil.sys, which is described as a "Filter driver for Silicon Image SATALink controllers". Since the device is an ATAPI one, not a SATA one, I'm not quite sure what's going on with that.

I've tried uninstalling the device and rebooting, but no joy. I've also looked through the process list to see whether I could spot anyone who might have their fingers on the divice, but again no joy. I even closed down my copy of Slickedit, since it has an annoying habit of not letting loose of its files even after they're closed.

I'm baffled!

Sorry, I meant it creates coasters when I tell it to go ahead anyway.

I'll install the latest version, but unless Microsoft did an update behind my back that broke the current version, the current version should still be working fine.

Did you ever try removing that filter driver from the list? I've seen it cause problems before.

Anyway, you still shouldn't be using an old version like that, it's over 3 years old and there have been tons of bug fixes since then.

Still getting the same error with the latest-and-greatest bits.

I still have no idea what that driver does, but XP really loves it. I commented it out and now get nothing but the BSOD. I can't even bring up the box in safe mode. I'm going to have to port the drive over to this box (fBSD) and clean it up here.

I've removed that filter driver using ImgBurn several times. It really shouldn't be that important.

Did you uninstall 2.5.0.0 before installing 2.5.7.0 ?

Make sure the SPTI enumeration option in the I/O tab within the settings is set for 'Device Interface'.

Then if you could post a new log I'd appreciate it. Even more so if you have one where it's coasting after not being able to lock the drive - try it on a DVD-RW or DVD-R with test mode enabled (to save wasting a disc).

Something evidently broke something good, because even after un-commenting that driver, XP would load, but hang. So I ended by reinstalling XP.

I installed 2.5.7 on top of 2.5, and still have the same 'can't lock' problem. Do I need to have another go?

Well, the problem seems to have gone away. I reinstalled 2.5.7, so perhaps that's what made the difference from yesterday.
