Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Hi I would like to know which of you drives is the Bluray XL Drive and what is the best Bluray drive that you have?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 You could have Googled the model numbers and found out for yourself in about 30 seconds but I'll tell you anyway.... it's the Pioneer BDR-207M. I can't give you an answer for which is the 'best' Blu-ray drive I own because I don't spend time trying to figure that out. I do a bunch of burns+scans with them sometimes (and post them in the 'Drives' or 'Media' forums) but I don't attempt to compile them and make any sort of conclusion. The LG and Pioneer models in my PC at the moment are both decent drives.
Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 (edited) Oh ok because im thinking of buying a second BD Drive, what model would you recomend for BD DL burning Bluray 3D support LabelTag + LightScribe + SmartErase scribe Edited October 3, 2012 by Adrianvdh
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Did you just copy + paste that off a Lite-On advert? SmartErase is a feature of their drives. If you want all that stuff then you'll need to buy the iHBS212. 3D support comes from the software you use for playback, not the drive. The LiteOn drives are handy because you can do disc quality scans with them. As I said before, I don't know what to recommend as the 'best' because I simply don't look at drives that way. Look at some reviews online - perhaps over the the MyCE forums.
Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 (edited) Oh ok so smart Erase is on on the iHas series and what are disc quality scans? Edited October 5, 2012 by Adrianvdh
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Yes but it's not something that would/should ever sway your decision on which drive to purchase, it's a pretty useless feature. If you don't want someone to read your discs once you've thrown them away, snap them in half first and save yourself loads of time. What might sway my decision is the ability to scan discs with the LiteOn drives. For that reason alone, I could never be without one. I'm not sure I'd choose to use my LiteOn drives over any of the others for burning discs though.
Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 It looks like a great drive does it support anything above BD DL
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 No, LiteOn don't offer any BD-XL drives at the moment. I'm sure it won't be long before they do though.
Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 So I should disable smart erase on mu iHAS 324 B
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 You can't disable smarterase, it's a function of the drive that you ask it to do when you want it to do it. Maybe you're thinking of 'Smartburn' ? It's enabled by default, leave it that way.
Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 oh ok but what do you use a BD XL Disc for and what does XL extra large but is QL then for?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I don't use it/them for anything, it/they just sits/sit there until I need it/them for something to do with ImgBurn. BDXL is the general name given to the TL and QL technology/discs.
Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 so BD-R is SL & DL and BDXL is TL & QL im a still confused with the BD-R and BD-RE which one is writable and what does RE stand for?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 They're both writable. BD-RE is the rewritable one. BD-ROM isn't writable - in the same way CD-ROM and DVD-ROM aren't either.
Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 Oh so why did they change the 'RW' to 'RE' and they both the same right?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I've no idea why they went from RW to RE with Blu-ray. Yes, RW and RE are both the rewritable versions of the discs for their respective formats.
Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 and a virtual drive is called BD-ROM because you can't rewrite to it or write once to it it like and orginal?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 No, it's because it can emulate a BD-ROM drive. A BD-ROM drive is one that can read BD (and CD/DVD) discs but can't write to them. Just as a DVD-ROM drive is one that can read DVD (and CD) discs but can't write to them.
Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 (edited) oh so you dont get BD-R drives? Only BD-RE for Reading/writing Bluray and BD-ROM for reading Bluray (can it read burnted Bluray discs) Edited October 3, 2012 by Adrianvdh
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I've never seen one that couldn't also write to BD-RE, no. Yes, BD-ROM drives can (well, normally they can anyway) read burnt discs. If you thnk about it, every standlone Blu-ray player / PS3 has a BD-ROM drive in it.
Adrianvdh Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 huh which drive havent you seen that couldn't also write to BD-RE is this the BD-R drives?
