MMacD Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 The new mamaboard for my dev machine has no floppy support, so I need to make a bootable cd that has my copy of SpinRite on it. (If it's not familiar to you, SpinRite is a well-regarded disc-exerciser and -recovery utility) What I did was: - using v2.5.7.0, extracted a copy of the boot file from my copy of XP. - first try: created an iso image with SpinRite.exe as the only content, built a cd using the boot file and the iso image. It failed verification. - second try: built an iso image with the boot file and spinrite.exe as its only content, and wrote it to cd. It too failed verification Obviously I'm doing something wrong, but I've no clue what.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 This sounds like a problem between your drive and the discs you're using - it's making a bad burn on them and they're unreable. Post the log please so we can see what's what.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 Try burning at 16 or 24x instead of 'max'. Your discs appear to be coming out 'empty' after the burn so something isn't quite right. How about burning to a DVD instead of a CD? You can use rewritables too.
MMacD Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 (edited) Neither dropping it to 16x nor switching to a TY DVD did any good. Judging by the surface of the disc, something is happening, but trying to get a listing gets a "please insert disc" response. I 07:08:02 ImgBurn Version 2.5.7.0 started! LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 It looks like your drive has lost the ability to burn / read. If you switch to Read mode and insert those burnt CD/DVDs, what does the disc info on the right say? (Copy + paste it all please)
MMacD Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 I think I discovered the problem, but it makes no sense to me. Perhaps it'll make sense to you: The mamaboard, an ASUS Sabertooth (stupid name) 990FX R2 allows 6 of its 8 sata ports to be designated as external in the bios, which I did. I had the dvd drive hooked up to one of the other two ports, but it was designated external too (I've not experimented to find out why). Evidently the drive doesn't like being hooked to an extern port, because it produced the problems that brought me here AND it refused to allow me to install freeBSD from it. I switched the drive to one of the designatable ports reverted to internal, and now everything appears to work normally. I find that uncanny, not to mention uncouthy.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Based on what I've seen, it makes no sense, no. There is of course a lot going on in the background that a 'user' never gets to see. Having proper access to the machine (for capturing I/O data etc) may have revealed important info as to why things weren't working properly. Anyway, if it's sorted now, that's good news
MMacD Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 Speaking of "proper access to the machine", are there any plans to port it to Xwindows & freeBSD (or even Linux, whose binaries fBSD will run in compat mode)? As far as I know, it'd have no competition. I'd buy a copy like a shot.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Sorry, there are no plans for supporting any other OS. People just have to rely on things like 'Wine' and virtual machine software that lets them run Windows.
