New Asus burner fails to verify

mpeterm

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've used Imgburn for years. Every few years I buy a new dvd burner. Up til now I've had liteons, pioneers, and others, and have never had a burn fail to verify, an impressive record. However, my newest burner, an ASUS DRW-24B1ST from Newegg, burns the disk but then fails every time when it tries to verify. I even tried to verify independant of the burn, and still no go.

I am so confident of Imgburn that when this first happened I returned the burner to Newegg as faulty, but the replacement burner acts the same way, so I'm now thinking settings or firmware.

I noticed the booktype setting as NA, is that something I could change? Any help would be appreciated. Also, the same media burned on my older pioneer verifies just fine, as always.

That log shows you burning at 6x, have you tried 8x too?

If you burn the ISO using the Asus drive, does it then verify ok (against the same ISO) in the Pioneer?

That'll help us understand if the problem is with the drive reading what it just wrote, or if it's with writing those discs in general.

That ASUS is just another Lite-On clone. To be honest, you'd have been better off (where firmware updates / advanced settings are concerned) just buying the actual Lite-On drive in the first place. Is it too late for Newegg to take it back again?

Hi, I tried burning at 8x, still the same verify error. I put the 6x and 8x versions of the disk in my pioneer, and they both failed to verify. If I go to the Asus site, they have firmware version 1.03 available for win XP. My burner comes with firmware version 1.05. I have used this same model burner for the past year in another computer, a dell running windows 7, and it performs fine.

I keep thinking that I should change the booktype or something. The new Asus is set to region unspecified, should I change it to region 1? Kinda trying to think of something that might make a difference.

I probably would not return the drive to Newegg, but would keep it for another computer, since the last return seems to have been my mistake. If I do choose to get a different model drive, do you have a current favorite $20 to $30 at Newegg?

Oh well, at least the errors are in the same places when verified in different drives... so the problem is with the burning - at least of YUDEN000-T02-00 discs. Do you have others you can try?

Right click the drive selection box and click 'Family Tree' for me please.

Close the prompt that comes up and then copy + paste everything from the Log window.

Do you have the same issue if you burn in safe mode?

It looks like the drive automatically changes the booktype to DVD-ROM and that isn't something the program can change. It must be locked down in the firmware.

I have the family tree for both the pioneer and the Asus. I also have the log for a successful burn and verify on the pioneer of the same image file and media as before.

One thing else. This the first SATA burner that I have tried on my computer, all the others (like the Pioneer) have been IDE drives. Imgburn identifies this Asus as SCSI, and the Pioneer as ATA. On my wife's computer, the dell, her Asus (also SATA) is identified as ATAPI. Also, under my computer in windows, the drive is identified as DVD-RAM.

Ok so what's the Silicon Image controller the Asus is attached to, a PCI card or is it built into the motherboard?

Those cards should be flashed with the 'base/IDE' bios and using the 'base' drivers if you're running optical drives from them.

Bios - http://www.siliconimage.com/docs/SiI3112_4402all.zip

This download includes IDE, SATARAID, and system BIOS. The r####.bin file is the SATARAID BIOS and the b####.bin is the IDE BIOS. The ####.bin is an abbreviated BIOS intended for integration into system BIOS. Do NOT flash system BIOS into an add-in card BIOS.

The silicon image controller is built into the motherboard, an older abit board from 2004. The board has two sata ports, one for my C: drive and the other unused until now. My second hard drive and the pioneer burner are IDE. I do not use RAID, but I needed to load the Silicon Image drivers at OS install to have SATA capability.

Am I correct in reading the silicon image link that I can load an updated controller driver that will allow the ASUS to be recognized as an optical drive? They list several, which would you suggest?

You need the controller to be using the 'base' / 'ide' bios before you can then use the base/ide drivers. Obviously you'd just go for the newest version of both - taking into account that the drivers need to be for your OS (i.e. don't get the one specific to Windows 7 etc)

I've never tried flashing the bios of an onboard controller as mine have always just been PCI cards.
