Primary Purpose Recording Posted May 31, 2013 Posted May 31, 2013 (edited) By my enhanced CD, I mean I had to jump through hoops and in the end resurect an old XP box to make this disk. The only way I've found to make gapless audio enhanced CD's is to burn my wav with a cue file in EAC, (Which I can't get to run on my Win 7 boxes, hence the XP machine), then having left the disc open in EAC, I finish burning the data track in CDBurnerXP. So far this is the only disk that I need to do this (add data) with. It's an informational CD of sorts, that I am including a printable guide with on the first disk of the set. I have in fact gotten a master made that plays well without gaps and has the data present. Given I don't want to be left in a situation where I have to hang on to this old machine forever or risk not being able to create a new master, I'd really like to be able to make a Bin/Cue backup and put it in my regular archives (which are easily and thoroughly backed up both on and off site), in case I ever have to make a new master. So, of course this all needs to be tested. I was able to create the Bin/Cue/CDT backup of the disk in ImgBurn, but upon attempting to write a new copy from those files I've gotten to 98% and ImgBurn has hung on, "Filling Buffer... (80 MB)" It's been hung there for just over an hour. The machine is a Windows 7 X64 box Intel i5 3570K Asus P8Z77-V LE Samsung MV-3V4G3D/US Samsung 840 Pro 128G Hitachi HDS72202 Et al It may be worth noting that I did in fact install the Intel RST driver for AHCI compiant drives as it was suggested earlier as a possible workaround for difficulties with EAC and Win 7. Primary Purpose Recording Posted June 1, 2013 Author Posted June 1, 2013 (edited) I don't know if any of the following helps at all. Maybe this is a common problem that the first reply to the thread will clear right up. Anyhow, here's what I've done while waiting. I checked the disc with ImgBurn and it said there was only one session with the 14 audio tracks I'd expect to see, and the disc was in fact still open. I tried, just for grins, to complete the job using ImgBurn, but it of course didn't much like the fact that the disk wasn't empty. Right. I began to wonder if perhaps only the second session had gotten scrapped. So I decided to see if I could finish the data session with CDBurnerXP like I had when creating the original master. The burn failed with that the first time through, but reported being open still, and still only having the 14 audio tracks, so I tried again. This time it supposedly burned the 9.0xMB of data and closed the disk. I did a disc quality scan and the result was interesting, or so I thought. So here it is I haven't tried to play or read the disk yet, but those two C2 spikes at the end pretty much tell me it's not going to be good. Anyhow, thanks in advance for taking a look. Edit>>> Rather than add a bunch of replies I'll just edit this one. For what it's worth, I have in fact been able to burn the resultant Bin/Cue/CDT using Nero 9 Essentials, but there is no data on the disc it produced. but there is no data on the disc it produced. Nero 6.6.1.4 shows the data track (Track 15 Data) when the cue is loaded and before the burn begins, but again, the resultant burn has no data track on the disc Just to be clear, the image was made using ImgBurn 2.5.7.0. Apparently there is a data track on both of these discs. Using the disc info tool in Nero 6.6 shows that it's there, but Windows Explorer doesn't see it. In fact, the disc shows up like a normal Redbook CDA disk with 14 CDA tracks. (The original Enhanced disk shows up like regular Bluebook enhanced discs where you can see the data only) I have an appointment this morning, but when I get back I'll fire up one of the duplicators and see what I get when I copy the original master disk I built. (Not that that really factors in here, but someone might find it interesting.) Hopefully someone has something for me to try. I'm giving coasters to all my friends and family for the holidays this year! ) Edited June 3, 2013 by Primary Purpose Recording
Primary Purpose Recording Posted June 3, 2013 Author Posted June 3, 2013 Ok, here we go again. After digging a little deeper it seems people have had some level of success by lowering the I/O buffer size so that it's smaller than the file they're trying to burn. Unfortunately in my case, the data file that's failing to burn is 9MB. So, I lowered the buffer size to a scant 5MB and let it rip. I'll post the log after the error I get after having had to cancel. I should probably also let you all know that the drive continued to spin like mad after things froze up again. Here's the error that came up after I canceled: It basicly asked me if I wanted to try again, I said no, then it asked me if I wanted to try to close the disk even though the burn appears to have failed. Again I said no. Given the drive never spun down and the progress bar only made something like 98% I didn't see the sense in it. I wouldn't trust a disc that had been burned this way anyhow. (Unless I had info from the author to the contrary.) LIGHTNING UK! Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 This issue has been fixed (ages ago) ready for the next version (well, fingers crossed anyway!) As for the 'write error', try slowing the write speed down a bit - like to say 24x.
Primary Purpose Recording Posted June 3, 2013 Author Posted June 3, 2013 {Shrug} I'll give it a try. Heck I'll burn 'em as slow as I have to given I hardly ever have to burn more than one on a PC. (I have several duplicators) But for what it's worth, I burn thousands of these disks a year in Sony/Opti 7240S drives (I own 27 of them) both in duplicators and PC's and to date have only had 3 failures @ 48X. The drives are probably nearing the end of their service life, but the drive I'm using probably hasn't burned even 300 CD's in it's lifetime. I'm starting to transition to the Sony/Opti 5280S-CB-Plus's but I still have most of those 7240S's in service at this time. I've got to tell you though, I really appreciate you putting this software out here for us all to use like this. (And the many others who do the same also) I've been burning CD's for, well, I'm not sure how long but my first writer was a brand spankin' new just-hit-the-market Yamaha 4x4x16 SCSI drive. What you've offered is no doubt a great effort especially with OS changes to contend with. Rest assured I'll happily be putting a little jingle in your pocket. It won't be nearly as much as I'd like it to be, but you an I both know that it'll be more than 98% of the folks who benefit from ImgBurn. If you've ever a need for any, "beta and beyond," testing I'd gladly help out. I rarely have any media aside from TY, FTI and CMC, but I can assure that the media/drive/firmware combinations I'm using are proven. The downside is for all intents and purposes, I only burn CD-r. I'm going to use the CMC stuff I've got. It's pretty stable and I'm sure using TY isn't actually going to make a difference. The only real difference I ever notice between TY and CMC aside from C1 error rate is that there are far and away more players that refuse to play CMC. For what it's worth I've also restarted ImgBurn and have checked that I/O Buffer size again. Still at 5MB. SO GET ON WITH IT ALREADY! Right, sorry.... It looks like we got no further this time. After progress stopped the drive really spun up fast, then it backed off on rotational speed again. It did that a few more times too. So we killed it 20 minutes in. This time I told it to re-try the synchronize and also to try to close the disk. LIGHTNING UK! Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 As your drive is still complaining about 'write errors', I'd say to give some better (TY) discs a try if you have access to some. The program only reports what the drive returns so there's nothing more I can tell you really.

EAC can write the audio portion, leaving the session open, on the XP box using a Sony/Opti 7240S with 1.04 fw. (It doesn't play nice with Win 7 for writing, at least I havent learned how yet.) I can then write the data track on either the XP box or one of the Win 7 rigs with CDBurnerXP, again, all using Sony/Opto 7240S's with the 1.04 firmware, and it all comes off without a hitch. Like I stated earlier, I've burned a ton of TY, FTI (I don't have much left, but again, I'm certain it's NOT the media) or CMC. All of it burns famously all the time with every application I've used. I strongly doubt it's the drives OR the media. Tomorrow I'm going to take a run at burning this on the XP rig. I'll also try it with the default 80MB I/O buffer. Were I a betting man, (and I am, given I'm running a business in New York State), my money would be on the problem being between Win 7 and ImgBurn. (Please do note I'd be placing the onus on Win 7 as I'm also betting that ImgBurn worked perfectly well before M$ decided to change all the rules. (again)) If anyone's got any other great ideas, or even not-so-great ideas I'll happily entertain them all. ) - John Edited June 4, 2013 by Primary Purpose Recording
