jolafson Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 Hello. I am a new user of ImgBurn so I apologize for my ignorance. Thet being said I just tried creating an image from a DVD+RW disk containing data files. ImgBurn does not load the disk or make any attempt at creating an image. I had no problem creating an image file from this same disk using Roxio Image Creator. Any ideas about what the problem may be? I am using a Toshiba laptop with Vista Ultimate 32-bit. I can send complete system info if that will help. Thanks for any help you can provide. Jerry
LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 The log would help, as would the disc info from the box on the right when you're in Read mode.
jolafson Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 The log file shows: ; //****************************************\\; ImgBurn Version 2.5.8.0 - Log; Friday, 26 July 2013, 07:05:35; \\****************************************//;;I 06:58:22 ImgBurn Version 2.5.8.0 started!I 06:58:22 Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition (6.0, Build 6002 : Service Pack 2)I 06:58:22 Total Physical Memory: 2,094,408 KiB - Available: 811,860 KiBI 06:58:22 Initialising SPTI...I 06:58:22 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...I 06:58:23 -> Drive 1 - Info: PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-K17LF 2.52-TOSHIBA (E:) (ATA)I 06:58:23 -> Drive 2 - Info: ROXIO DVD-ROM EMULATOR 2.00 (F:) (SCSI)I 06:58:23 Found 1 DVD-ROM and 1 DVD±RW/RAM!I 07:05:28 Close Request AcknowledgedI 07:05:28 Closing Down...I 07:05:35 Shutting down SPTI...I 07:05:35 ImgBurn closed! LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 26, 2013 Posted July 26, 2013 If it's stuck with the 'getting media status' message in the status bar, your drive must be having trouble reading the disc. Try ejecting it, cleaning it and then giving it another go. It doesn't look like you've even got to the stage where you can start the actual read operation going.
jolafson Posted July 26, 2013 Author Posted July 26, 2013 I have done some additional testing of ImgBurn option for creating Image files. I am attaching two documents which summarizes my findings and conclusions. The PDF document has some screenshots of different options I tried. I also included the ImgBurn Log file which I added my comments. Hope this information is usefull for solving similar problems and also suggesting some improvements that could be made to ImgBurn since I was able to use Roxio Create Image application to create an image file from a data only RW DVD. LIGHTNING UK! Posted July 27, 2013 Posted July 27, 2013 2 of your 3 conclusions are wrong. It doesn't care what's written to the disc, it's reading at sector level and not file level - so the contents don't even come into it. What it stops you from doing is reading a multiple track / session DVD or BD disc to an image file because there's no way to faithfully reproduce the exact same disc layout. I think if you were able to see the return codes from the drive as it's 'getting media status', you'd see the drive is having trouble reading the disc. Switch to read mode and get your unreadable disc ready. Press F8 to enable I/O debug mode and then insert the bad DVD+RW disc. It should log lots more stuff - save the log to a file (using file -> save as in the log window) and upload it so I can examine it.
jolafson Posted July 27, 2013 Author Posted July 27, 2013 Thanks for looking at the data I uploaded. I tried to follow your instructions and tried to create an image from both a DVD+RW disc and a DVD-R disc. I captured the log file and added my comments about actions I took. Not sure if I inserted my comments on exactly the right place as there was a lot of data being recorded. Hopefully the information is helpfull. Thanks, again! ImgBurn_20130727.log
