LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Erase the disc and try again? I can't really do a lot when the program isn't getting back any useful error codes from the drive / system. All you're getting is 'no additional sense information'. Install the 1.08 firmware from here - http://www.firmwarehq.com/Pioneer/DVR-106D/files.html Try with a different disc if possible too. Your drive may not like 'CMCW02' discs very much - but again, it's hard to say without a proper error code.
six-h Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 Thanks for your advice, this was the second attempt with a new disc. I don't often burn discs these days and over the last two years maybe, I have successfully used 12 out of this batch of 20, so I think the drive finds them acceptable. Can you advise me how to go about installing the 1.08 firmware, as I haven't a clue?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 It's an EXE so just download it and run it. The rest is pretty obvious.
six-h Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 Ah!, thanks I'll give it a try before contributing to the local landfil!
six-h Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 Hmm! Looks like it's destined for landfil. Tried to install the firmware it returned a message "Available target is not found"! That of course is a lie, since I can see the blessed drive!
LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Ah sorry, that's actually my fault. You've got a 'Medion' version of the drive and so would need to use their firmware. The latest of which is v1.07 and I've just uploaded that to Firmware HQ for you. http://www.firmwarehq.com/Pioneer/DVR-106D/files.html You can actually flash your drive with the proper Pioneer firmware if you do a bit of crossflashing with a modified upgrade tool and 1.07 firmware, then run the official 1.08 firmware update. http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=19534

LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 That log still shows the drive running the 1.05 firmware. The official Medion 1.07 firmware file only seems to extract itself to a folder (it defaults to C:\Medion). From there, you have to go into the 'C:\Medion' folder and run the 'DVR106DA_FW107EU.EXE' file manually to actually update the firmware. Ignore the 'Invalid Address For Write' errors, it's the first error that's the important one and not anything that shows up after a 'Retry'. In your case, that's this one... I 13:45:42 Writing LeadIn... W 13:46:05 Failed to Write Sectors 768 - 799 - Reason: No Additional Sense Information W 13:46:05 Retrying (1 of 20)... There should a real description of the error listed there, but for some reason your drive/system isn't passing it back to the program (hence what I said in my first reply).
six-h Posted January 21, 2014 Author Posted January 21, 2014 (edited) Well, that definitely did something! Commandline reported success...but then I got a message from "Program compatibility Assistant" that it might not have installed properly! It gives me th options to "Re-Install using recommended settings" ...no idea if that will change anything vital, so I'll wait for your advice on that! Edit @ 16:01 I decided to hit the button and accept "recommended settings" all that happened was it confirmed that ver 1.07 was installed already. Do I have any other options? The other option is to confirm it's installed OK....which it evidently didn't! Same message after the "Writing Leadin.." LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Load the program, go into 'Write' mode, right click the drive drop down selection box and select 'Family Tree'. Close the prompt that comes up and then copy + paste everything from the Log window again for me please.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 21, 2014 Posted January 21, 2014 Ah that's a shame, no native IDE port on that board so you're forced to use the 3rd party Marvell one. That may well be why the program isn't getting proper response codes (sense data) back from the drive. Do you have an option in your BIOS to switch that Marvell controller into AHCI mode? I'm wondering if it might behave differently somehow.

I'll try and access the BIOS later in the week and let you know. meanwhile, I might take the line of least resistance and dust off a Linux machine that I KNOW can write discs OK! Oh, and thanks for your excellent help! Edited January 21, 2014 by six-h
