armadillo Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I have had trouble recently burning MP3 discs to use in my car player. In fact, I discoverd ImgBurn a month or so ago while I was trying to figure out what kind of problem I have and how to solve issues. I have learned that my discs may need to be burned at a slower speed. I do know that I could possibly purchase premium discs. But, for the time being I also have settled on the fact that the burner in my Dell Studio desktop may not be the best. Today I burned a disc and noticed that ImgBurn tried to set the speed to my desired of 6x, however the burner does not support anything slower than 16x. All my attempts to burn these MP3 failed the verify routine, usually towards the end of the disc burn about 65%. I was about ready to purchase a new burner, but noticed the specs in most ads don't even mention the slowest allowable speeds for the drives. I am also worried about the reliability of my process for archiving and protecting important data (photos, data backup, etc). Q: When purchasing, how do you figure out what speeds a drive will function at when using ImgBurn? Q: How do we pick the most reliable media? I have several hundred blank discs that may only be useable at 6x or less. Q: Any other suggestions about how to go about diagnosing my issues?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Are you talking about burning to CDs or DVDs? Taiyo Yuden make good CDs, they're all I ever use. You can't know beforehand which speeds your drive will support on a given disc really. You'd need to look at a list provided by the manufacturer for the different MIDs (if such a thing exists) and then try to buy matching discs.
armadillo Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 Here's a copy of the log I forgot to attach to my original post. Yoiu can see where ImgBurn complains that the slowest speed supported by my burner is 16x. Is this common for burners? How do you check if a burner you want to buy supports a wider range of speeds? 08:24:53 Operation Started!I 08:24:53 Source File: -==/\/[bUILD IMAGE]\/\==-I 08:24:53 Source File Sectors: 320,464 (MODE1/2048)I 08:24:53 Source File Size: 656,310,272 bytesI 08:24:53 Source File Volume Identifier: MP3I 08:24:53 Source File Volume Set Identifier: UNDEFINEDI 08:24:53 Source File Application Identifier: ImgBurn v2.5.8.0 - The Ultimate Image Burner!I 08:24:53 Source File Implementation Identifier: ImgBurn v2.5.8.0I 08:24:53 Source File File System(s): ISO9660, JolietI 08:24:54 Destination Device: [1:0:0] HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GH30N A102 (D:) (ATA)I 08:24:54 Destination Media Type: CD-R (Disc ID: 97m26s54f, Lead Data Inc.)I 08:24:54 Destination Media Supported Write Speeds: 16x, 24x, 40x, 48xI 08:24:54 Destination Media Sectors: 359,847I 08:24:54 Write Mode: CDI 08:24:54 Write Type: SAOI 08:24:54 Write Speed: 6xI 08:24:54 Lock Volume: YesI 08:24:54 Test Mode: NoI 08:24:54 OPC: NoI 08:24:54 BURN-Proof: EnabledW 08:24:54 Write Speed Miscompare! - Wanted: 1,058 KB/s (6x), Got: 2,822 KB/s (16x)W 08:24:54 The drive only supports writing these discs at 16x, 24x, 40x, 48x.I 08:24:54 Filling Buffer... LIGHTNING UK! Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 If I really needed to find a drive that could burn slowly, I'd read reviews until I found one. 16x wouldn't be a problem on decent Taiyo Yuden CDs... unless the drive is dirty or just plain faulty.
