djowii Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 Hey guys! Could some of you please share your expertise and help me to burn a DL-dvd? I'm trying to burn a super smash bros brawl wii .iso file to a Philips DVD+R DL disc, with an Optiarc (NEC) DVD RW AD-7173S, which is supposed to support DL dvd's. I have tried updating the DVD-burner firmware from 1.0 to 1.2 but this didnt change anything. Errorlog: I 19:28:21 Operation Started! djowii Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 Update the firmware on your drive. Done. Try cleaning the drive with a cleaning disc. I barely use it and it's always closed. I burned normal dvd's last week, I doubt this is a problem Try burning your current media at all of the write speeds your drive says it supports for that MID (look in the disc info text on the right of the main screen to see what they are). Done. Avoid using slimline laptop style drives - in general, they're rubbish. Done. Buy a new drive that supports your current media better/properly (this is still going to be a bit hit and miss). Mine seems to support DL up until 8x speed Thanks Lightning. However, I've seen that one. But Philips is a renown brand, not some shitty cheapass chinese stuff. Do you really think Verbatim would make the difference?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 The brand makes no difference. It's the disc id (media ID / MID) that's important and yours are the rubbish CMC ones. As I'm not seeing any supported write speeds listed in the log, the firmware may not support that mid at all. That happens when the drive is older than the mid.
djowii Posted May 11, 2014 Author Posted May 11, 2014 so if I understand correctly I have to either:1. get my hands on a newer drive 2. the philips mid is newer than my drive, so I need to get Verbatim discs who's mid is older, so they might work with my drive?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Yes. The verbatim MKM mid discs are the best ones available. It isn't a simple case of them working or not working (outright failure as in your case), you get different quality burns too. The better quality the burn, the more readable the discs are and the longer they'll probably stay being readable.
