Long unnecessary erase/format of DVD+RW

ImgBurn 2.5.8.0 on Windows 8.1 Pro  Update 1 (up-to-date)

 

I tried to burn an image to DVD+RW and did this:

 - inserted a DVD+RW 4X disc (pre-recorded)

 - erased it with Windows built in method

 - right click an *.iso file (about 2.5 GB big) and select "Birn using ImgBurn"

 - ImgBurn claimed it needed to format the media and I clicked OK (should've take 10 seconds most)

 

 - it is erasing/formatting since 10 minutes now

 

So there are two bugs:

 - it wants to erase an already blank disc

 - does a full erase instead of quick

Formatting a disc properly takes time and the program is doing what it's supposed to based on what your drive is reporting.

Some erase/write processes don't do it correctly.  For instance, I've encountered cases of rewritable discs erased/written by Nero that ImgBurn had to fully format before it could reuse them.  Windows erase process may be one of them.  Besides, doesn't Windows want to erase rewritable discs so they're basically packet written and can be dynamically written to?

FYI: I just burned an ISO image to a DVD medium of same type, using the Windows burn functions (same PC as before).

It took about 10-15 seconds to erase, then 10 minutes to write (about 3 GB, the speed is 4x) and about 10 more for verify.

 

Both DVDs were in a "regular" ISO FS format (that is: not packet written).

ImgBurn's erase/formatting all comes down to one thing... the 'Formatted' status field you can see in the disc info box on the right when you're in Write mode.

If it says 'Yes' for that, it won't format. For anything else, it will and it'll do it properly so that field turns into a Yes.

 

If you want it to behave like other formatters, adjust the settings so it doesn't format properly.
