I am unable to format a 50G Verbatim BD-RE Double Layer disc with Imageburn.  Prior to burning, the program says I need to format the disc.  I try to do so by going in to Drive > Erase Disc > Full (and Quick as well).  When I do so, I get the irritating "Ohhhh Nooooo" error announcement, without guidance on what might be the issue.  I'm using a brand new disc in an LG GBW-H20L drive in Win7.  I've verified that this drive is capable of reading/writing 50gb re-writeable double layer discs.  I've used several discs from the same 5-pack, and I get the same results on all.

For that matter, I cannot format using Win7 either.  When Win7 asks "How do you want to use this disc" and I respond "Like a USB Flash Drive" (Live File System), Win7 responds "Windows Was Unable to Complete the Format".    If I respond "Like a CD/DVD Player" (Mastered), Win7 responds by creating the file "desktop.ini" on the desktop whose contents consist of the following:  "[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21815",   with no instructions on how to proceed.

This shouldn't be that hard.  Any ideas, other than a bum discs?

I don't know if that drive contains firmware support for that MID. Try cross flashing the drive to the better GGW model and then install the latest firmware update for it.

Cross flashing details can be found here...

Then use ImgBurn's firmware update check to locate a newer version for your drive.

OK, I downloaded the GGW firmware YL07 and MCSE software, but I cannot find the DriveUpdater software anywhere on the net. Do you know of a link to download DriveUpdater?

When using the MCSE software, it creates a file called "GGWH20L_YL07_speedpatched.exe" from the original firmware that I downloaded.  Is that the file that gets loaded into DriveUpdater?

Many thanks.

D'oh.  Many thanks, I can now format/erase by BD-RE DL discs.   Why would the drive need a more current firmware, given that it was designed to work with said discs?
