Hi All,

I've tried searching the forums but the only mention of layer type was in http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?/topic/20309-imgburn-can%C2%B4t-close-bd-r-dl-verbatim/ and its not actually part of the discussion just mentioned in the DVD settings.

As far as I'm aware this can have 3 different settings: 1=read only, 2=recordable, 4 re-writeable

Some drives seem to set this to 1 when the book type is DVD-ROM other set it to 2. The drive I'm trying to read it on only appears to read the DVD's correctly if it is set to 1.

Is this something that is supported/can be set in ImgBurn?

Thanks,

Ed.

I think you're talking about the book type / bitsetting. Yes, ImgBurn supports that and sets it to DVD-ROM automatically for most drives. It's a function the drives need to support though, there's no 'standard' way of doing it.

It's additional to the book type setting as far as I know but related to it. I'll do some testing later when I'm at home with ImgBurn and see what is reported as currently I'm just creating coasters with no reliable way of setting the Layer Type which seems random on different manufacturers hardware.

I've never heard or seen anything doing what you're talking about.

Don't overlook the fact the post you linked to was talking about BD media. No such field exists for DVD.

I think your issue may lie elsewhere. What exactly are you trying to burn, onto what type of discs and what's the playback device?

Hi thanks for the replies. I'm trying to burn a sat nav disc that my Audi RNS-e will read as I have found some software online that will let me upgrade the 4 part postcode address system to a full 6 digits.

However it is notoriously hard to produce discs that the unit will read, it was suggested that this Layer Type value might be the missing link as to why certain burners could produce discs that were readable and others weren't. From speaking to the guy who developed the postcode software it seems like this value is no longer set by DVD burners so its only an option on older kits but this value seems to be hard coded.

Oh I see. From experience, I can tell you that some drives will just work for the RNS-e and others won't. Luckily, I have more than 1 drive. I think the Pioneer drive I tried at the time didn't work, but an Optiarc one did (or vice versa). These were (are still relatively) current models from said manufacturers.
