Trying to install ubuntu on a thinkpad lenovo r61 running windows 7

using new Verbatim "Live Series" 4.7 GB dvd-r

the ubuntu disc image file is

Ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64

Which downloaded successfully.

When I tried to burn the dvd using Windows, I got the error

"The disk image didn't burn successfully because an error occurred. (error code 0x80004005)"

Downloaded and installed imgburn, and got this error message:

"Device not ready (no reference position found)"

I looked in the faq and searched, but didn't find any information about this.

I bought this computer used just the other day so I figure maybe it just doesn't burn discs,

so I googled "does thinkpad lenovo r61 burn discs?"

and at this link

http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/ds002212

it says

"You should install the CD/DVD/BD writing software which supports CD/DVD/BD creation function from the ISO image file to create the BIOS Update CD"

I looked for this "writing software" for my computer but can't find it.

This is as far as I have gotten.

Can you help me with this?

I have some 700 meg cd's.  They are too small for the ubuntu image, which is about 1 gig, but I tried it anyway to see what happened.

There was no error message this time.  It just said the disc is too small, do you want to overwrite or truncate.

I am going to return the dvd's I just bought and try something else.  Is there some reason windows and imgburn would not recognize a brand new dvd?
