Cannot create image from disc - L-EC Uncorrectable Error

Hi guys, I could use some help!

I am trying to create an image of Rainbow Six Raven Shield, the computer game.  I own the original discs which I have kept in a cool area, in their original case, in a box.

I was able to create an image of the first disc no problem, but disc 2 gives L-EC Uncorrectable Error.  It will retry 20 times before failing.  At the end it says 'IO Error.'

When I put the CD in it autoloads up fine, so why can't IMGBurn burn it?

I ran the disc under cool water and then wiped it and let it try.  Unfortunately that made no difference...

Here is the log for you.

Your disc is copy protected.

Why would disc 2 be copy protected and disc 1 isn't?

This is a very old game too...

Also I meant create an image, not burn.

I expect disc 1 is used for installation and disc 2 is required when you actually run the game?

Copy protection has been around for ages. It'll either be safedisc or securom.

I find this hard to believe.  Disc 1 and 2 are both used for installation, I cannot remember which is actually used as the play disc.

I have already made backups of other games I own like Diablo and Oblivion and had no problems.

Doesn't ImgBurn say 'This disc is copy protected!' if that's the case?

How can I get around this?

Ok well it looks like you were right...

After some google searches, Disc 2, and only Disc 2 is protected by SafeDisc.  I confirmed it by looking at the Daemon Tools database.

That said, I still cannot create an image from this disc.  I tried it in Daemon Tools and I get this...

What do I do now?  Does this mean my disc is damaged or is this some SafeDisc trick?  I figured if IMGBurn cannot create an image, Daemon Tools could.

Read operation had hit a ECC/EDC bad (recoverable) block (824)
Disc imaging failed.

It only says a disc is copy protected when CSS or ACSS is detected. That's done by querying the drive. You can't query the drive to find out if a disc uses safedisc or securom etc.

You'll have to ask for help over at the DT forum now I'm afraid, I can't help you beyond what I've already said.
