Some of this has been posted on another site, on the advice of a friend posted it here also.

I've been doing some personal DL media testing the last while, more specifically non-Verbatim. The reason for that being obviously that Verbatims work very well, known fact. The first testers were of the Ritek nature, with similar results to most everyone else. Failure to verify, etc. Next on the burning block were Fuji DL's, with the following results.

Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):

Disc ID: RICOHJPN-D00-01

Book Type: DVD-ROM

Part Version: 1

Disc Size: 120mm

Maximum Read Rate: Not Specified

Number of Layers: 2

Track Path: Opposite Track Path (OTP)

Linear Density: 0.293 um/bit

Track Density: 0.74 um/track

First Physical Sector of Data Area: 196,608

Last Physical Sector of Data Area: 16,578,943

Last Physical Sector in Layer 0: 2,197,887

Layer Information:

Layer 0 Sectors: 2,001,280 (50.02%)

Layer 1 Sectors: 1,999,616 (49.98%)

Burned with a NEC3520, at 2.4X, 4X was an option though.

I've had very good luck with these so far, and fully intend to pick up more. All things being equal (ie price) I'd still give Verb's the nod, but only because of their widespread success rate, not because I've had them work any better. If anyone has some other test's they'd like performed on these, let me know, if possible I'll conduct them.

Hi Grain

I was wondering if you had used any of the Mitsubishi DVD+R DL.

If you have have you had any problems with them???

I have been using some MaxData and they seem to hit and miss as well. 3 have worked and 2 haven't.

Thanks heaps

Its good to see the research being done by others, thanks Grain ! But for my money I am still sticking with the Verbatim DVD+R DL's......

To the best of my knowledge and research, and I stand to be corrected, there are only 3 approved manufacturers of DL media, Ricoh, Ritek & Mitsubishi Chemicals. All three of these are sold under numerous different brand names. Ritek's DL's are widely considered as very poor, Ricoh's are a little less talked about, some people don't like them because they're not "Verbatim" :P , but I think those people are secretly on Verbs payroll :shifty: . To answer your question quowangerup, Mitsubishi makes Verbatims DL's, which are excellent, and are the best from my personal testing, with Ricohs being a very decent alternative, and at almost half the price they become even more interesting. And don't be so hard on yourself LFC, your not boring =))

Although I've never tried Ricoh DL discs, I've nothing but respect for the Ricoh brand. They make some great DVD+R discs - which I have purchased on many occasions.

If you can get them at the Ritek price, I see no reason why Ritek should EVER sell another DL disc!

Thanks for your reply grain. Mitsubishi seems to be a little bit cheaper over here in oz than verbatim are. I might try them.

Maxdata comes up as Ricoh in DVDDecrypter, but they seem to be a bit funny. The first 3 I used were great, but now the next 3 have come up with the IO error, and it is not correctable. Only in the verification part. The movie still plays fine on the home DVD player, but on the PC gets stuck after about 1/2 way through the movie. So I will try some mitsubishis.

Thanks again

You can find non-Verbatim but MCC made +DL's cheaper in Canada also, the trade being some companies don't offer as good a warranty as Verbatim. Some folks at another forum are complaining about Verbatims recent quality, but it may depend where you are in the world. Apparently part of Europe is now getting Verbs made in India, which have mixed reviews. Some love 'em, others hate 'em. Ultimately we just have to go with what we know works.

On another note, make sure you change the booktype to dvdrom on all +DL's you burn.

g'day again grain

Thanks again for your help and suggestions. May I ask why I have to change the booktype to dvdrom??

I also have my settings on SPTI what is the best one to use???

I have a Pentium 4 2.8GHZ and running XP. I have only just started to burn with DL's so I am abit of a noobie still. Any help would be much appreciated??

If you change the book type to DVD-ROM your standalone player stands a much better chance of recognising the disc - don't forget when a lot of the standalones were bought DVD+R DL didn't exist.... :)

Oh and leave your settings on default as much as possible - these really do work best for all burns !

If I can save 36 minutes and get a good burn like that, no more 2.4X for me.

Hi ifcrule and grain

I tried to change my booktype on the weekend without success.

I have a pioneer dvr-108 and there are no pioneer tabs to change.

Also all the tabs do not say DVD-ROM they all say DVD+R DL or DVD+R or DVD-R.

How can I change the booktype??

Thanks

I would wait for Lightning UK! to read this and advise if any of the tabs can be used for Pioneer drives. On mine (NEC) I select change for media type DVD+R DL, then in the next drop down menu I select DVD-Rom as the book type ;)

gnowangerup, I don't believe Pioneer drives support bit setting. I have a 109 and it won't support it and the 110 doesn't either. I might be wrong but thats why the pioneers aren't listed in IMGburn. :/

Not as nice as the Verb 6X scan, but I like it. Decent verify rate.
